What is your best tip for hard water fishing.
« on: Nov 30, 2008, 04:51 PM »
Wanted to start a post where you could pass along something new that helped with you catching fish.                                                                                                                                                                    Mine would be that it I seem to catch more fish on a horazonal jig than a vertical one. I think this is true because the meat on the hook is in line with the fishes mouth. easy for them to suck it in. Watching on the camera the light biters seem to take it more often.
Take a kid fishing, they make great pack mules.
Put the big ones back for another day eat the small ones.

When using live bait pinch them until they pop to make more of a sent trail. Not all of them have to be flattened out just one. If using minnows try pinching the body off and just leaving the head on the hook.

For married guys: Go as often as possible, even if you jump into your truck and pretend to be going to work. Make sure to wash off the fish smell before you see your wife again. Or, remember this line when you call from on the ice; " had a short day at work so I thought I'd swing by lake so and so, and try to get some fresh fillets for dinner."

My advice would be to keep spending as much time on IceShanty.Com as possible.

Seems to be an INFINITE number of good guys- and all the advice one could handle!

Thanks to ALL you dudes for making this such an awesome site!

P.S.  I also recommend wearing warm boots on the ice.  That's all.

Bring as much gear as you can and never leave any on or under the ice. I always like ice fishing in a hut and bringing the propane tank and a heater. I stay warm all day. And always bring Chains for the truck. I have had to dig out to many trucks with 5 gal buckets.

Never put yourself in a position where you're looking up at the ice. Fish hard. Be safe.  ;D

Make sure to keep enough "not to be drunk unless a dire emergency" beer in the bottom of your bucket when engaging in shantyless hard water exploits in SE Wyo.  Otherwise, when you stand up to fight a lunker - the wind will make your bucket disappear in a hurry!

When fishing crappie (especially), do NOT leave the ice too early.  An empty (Vex) screen at 2 p.m. may absolutely light up between 3:30 p.m. and dark.
