Title: NJ Get Together Info ..
Post by: LoneWolf on Dec 23, 2009, 12:22 PM
Well it looks like it may be a good year for ice !

It's time to start discussing this years derby (get together).

Should we do a lake we've done already or try another lake ?

As for a date we'll have to wait and see what the Ice God's has in store for us.

I really liked Aeroflex last year but I'm open to other possibilities.

spruce run is nice and big, with alot of different kind of fish?
Title: Re: NJ Derby ..
Post by: JigAwhopper on Dec 23, 2009, 10:20 PM
Spruce Run is also a giant dead sea in my opinion,  so it would be a lot of fishing,  not a lot of catching.  It got pike,  but panfish are hard to locate when ice fishing. .  Did better there on a boat.

Guy's we will pick a lake that has 1# a lot of parking  2# that lake will need 6 + inches of ice & bait shop's around the lake .

I'll tell you what , if this cold weather holds up our options will be greatly increased by adding some good Central Jersey Lakes into the fray! ::)

There are many lakes i can think of Lake Hopatcong is good with many bait shops in the area, Aeroflex is great, Monksville, Greenwood lake. i think hopatcong would be good on the count we would all be able to park at the state park to meet

You have my vote.  It would be my first Derby, but can't think of a better place I'd like to spend fishing it.

aeroflex was okay last year.. i would to see alteast one of the "get togethers" in another spot.. hopatcong is a good one or budd lake? maybe oxford furnace?

It would be my first derby as well. What about swartswood lake??
Title: Re: NJ Derby ..
Post by: Jig4M on Dec 25, 2009, 09:40 PM
I like the idea of Swartswood. There's definitely plenty of parking and bait shops close to the lake. I agree Aeroflex was good last year but I wouldn't mind mixing it up. Maybe once we find a good selection of lakes that work for us all we have to do is make a yearly rotation list.
Title: Re: NJ Derby ..
Post by: LoneWolf on Dec 26, 2009, 10:23 AM

We still have time. We've done Hopatcong and Aeroflex so now we can discuss another. If conditions allow maybe we can do a lake further south. If so we'll have to call on Reb for some help with that.  ;)
I personally like the idea of trying different lakes as it just opens more possibilities for all of us.

Title: Re: NJ Derby ..
Post by: KingKool on Dec 27, 2009, 09:48 AM
I like Wizzofd's idea of Oxford Furnace if its safe enough.... Tons of parking and you got Hi-Way sport shop right on rt 31 and you can fish anywhere on it and be within walking distance to any weigh/measurment station.

what road is the parking lot off of, 521?
Title: Re: NJ Derby ..
Post by: jersey dave on Dec 28, 2009, 06:34 PM
Yes it is off of 521 I dont know any bait shops there either. I only went there twice last year and it was horrible maybe bad days I guess I did see one guy catch a 20 inch bow when I was there. Only fish caught by anyone there. Swartswood is loaded with good perch and is also stocked with trout and walleye. Never got a walleye but hope to find them in there. They netted a 13 pounder out of there a few years ago. But whatever is decided by the masses I am in.

Post by: KneeDeepSteve on Dec 29, 2009, 12:03 PM
I'm in for this year. Hopatcong would be nice but the parking would be an issue. I would think Swartswood or Furnace would be good. Both have some good jigging and also both have some bruisers for tip ups. If there is a lot of people then I think Furnace may be a little jammed and Swartswood would have more than enough room. Also can this thing happen on a Sunday because with tax season coming up my Saturdays are shot. :'(

Split Rock is a hump and a half out in the bush, as long as names are getting tossed out. Parking is OK, but nothing to write home about.
Title: Re: NJ Derby ..
Post by: Cuzn on Dec 30, 2009, 10:01 PM
Lake Musconetcong has plenty of parking all around the lake. Fishing for all species is usually very good. Hardly ever get skunked even on bad days. There's a bait shop right there that opens 5:30am almost everyday. (Closed Mondays) Bait and Boat, next to the Hess station. They have great healthy bait, lures, ice fishing equipment. They are also the major supplier of bait to most all the tackle shops in the state. Their turnover never stops all year. The lake is easy to find and easy to get to. The ice stays safe when most lakes get iffy.

Unless there is one on Rt. 23 near the North end of Greenpond Rd (Rt. 513) the closest one I know is Dover Sport (Rt. 23 isn't that close either except closer as the crow flies). That's about a 1/2 hr. ride from Split Rock. Nothing much is close to Split Rock except woods!!! Beautiful and pristine though and likely why it stays some what clean. Unfortunately, there are some who still throw their trash in the woods . Sad but true. I would suggest getting your bait the day before travelling there.

lake hopatcong would be good.fish the state park.
Title: Re: NJ Derby ..
Post by: KingKool on Jan 06, 2010, 12:10 PM
I agree also with State Park too...primarily because its an area that is easy to fish!!! Pretty much the same depth in all areas. I think that should be the number one criteria in choosing a spot. Deep water lakes are fine and all but if you dont have electronics you are pretty much fishing blind even with a map.
Its also another place thats within decent walking distance to wherever a weight/length station would be.

There is a bait shop there: Garden State Bow and Reel It is about 1/4 mile north of the intersection od RT23 and Holland Mountain Road. I think about a mile north of Green Pond Road.

Gents,

Go to the New Jersey Reports and Conditions section of the NJ ice shanty forum and on page 1 of the Split Rock Res/Morris thread, January 6th I posted directions from Rt. 80 along with a trail map from Wildcat Ridge (showing roads, Reservoir and trails). You can manipulate the map if you want....N, S, E or W plus zoom features. That should help to get you there. Hope this helps.

4inch_ok,

That's a 10-15 minute ride from Split Rock and may be a good option for those travelling from Rt. 23 to Rt. 513 S (Green pond Rd) to the Reservoir via Upper Hibernia and Split Rock Rd.

I've been communicating back and forth with Reb and it's not looking good for central Jersey lakes. Reb had said that there was safe ice but he's talking 4"-6" and with the warm spell this week it's not looking good.
We need to make a choice shortly so we can give adequate notice to every one. We'll make a decision this weekend and I'll post it on Monday.

As of now Jan. 30th or Jan. 31st might be good.
Some good news though .. I already have a few sponsors.  ;D

I think Hopatcong and north are the best bets. We have 5-6" of ice in the central/southern parts of the state but thats not enough for the derby and as Doug said this little warm burst and rain may kill what we have down here.
Doug and Shawn=== Please try to pick a lake and a day, where and when the fish are in a cooperative mood..No Pressure of course!!!   Lmao

Okay ... Saturday January 30th and it will be Swartswood depending on ice conditions  .. we will be checking. Swartswood was chosen to again try a different body of water and for it's wide variety of species : Panfish, Catfish, Pickerel, LM/SM Bass, Brown/Rainbow/Brook Trout, Walleye.

If for any reason the ice isn't safe we'll reschedule for February and or a different lake.

I'll place a main post once I have everything in place.

I'm hoping the ice holds up. We had a warm spell but the nights have been pretty good and I'm hoping we lost very little.
As we do every year we insist on at least 6" of ice. If the ice seems iffy we will reschedule for February.

"That is on saturday on the large lake not the small one correct!! Where do we park for that in the beach area lot? And what time is this going to start on jan 30-2010?"

It's not at Little Swartswood it's at Big Swartswood. Yes we are parking at the main lot. It will start at 7:00 AM and end at 3:00 PM.

I have one report of 9" of ice on Swartswood. Shawn's following up on that today. We are supposed to have some low temps this week so it's looking good.

I'll will be placing a NJ "Get Together" sign up post just so we have an idea of how many will be coming. We will be calling our derby a Get Together from this year on .. it just makes it easier on state ran lakes.

As always kids are welcome and I should have give a ways.

We're not going to have the Get Together if the ice is less than 6" or the shoreline is open. It doesn't hurt to sign up .. if it gets cancelled we'll do a new sign up post. We're just trying to get a rough count.

As of now they are calling for cold weather from Wed night thru next week. If we didn't lose too much we should be in good shape.
Again Shawn will check tomorrow and we will post.

Shawn just went out and checked the ice. He checked in several areas out from the parking lot. The ice was CLEAR (not mottled) and varied from 5-6 inches.
The shoreline had some open areas but only a foot or so out and in less than a foot of water.
The temps are supposed to be single digit tonight and Friday night. The highs are supposed to be in the low 20's.

The shoreline and ice should be fine for Saturday .... it's on !

I'll get the main Get Together post ,with all the info, up tonight or tomorrow.

I've never fished the ice before so I'm really pumped about tomorrow being my first outing!  I bought all of the stuff before the season started and then we had all of that great cold weather but my Dad went into the hospital.  Finally he's home and I have an opportunity to go.  I'm feeling great about going with all of you guys.  I'm hoping to learn a lot about how to do this.  I didn't want to go our with one of my fishing buddies that knows evven less about ice fishing than me.  I've got all of the gear that I think I need and clothes that are plenty warm but I might need some tips out there guys.  I'll be wearing a Jets hat and a blue/white jacket and pulling a red plastic sled with all of my stuff in it.  I'll accept any advice that anyone wants to give and if I screw up any of the ice fishing protocols please let me know.  I have a good selection of jigs and stiff for my jigging rod and some power bait maggots but I'm planning to stop at Simon Peters for bait for the tip ups.

Two questions..

Is there any sense at all in bringing any of my artificial worms and grubs?

I'm hoping to get shiners and mealworms at Simon Peters - Is that the right selection for Swartswood through the ice?

your probably better off w. mousies than the mealies. ive never used artificals such as u talked about but thats not to say they dont work. you will only find out one way, and just do it. You are going to need to put in a few hours on the ice to get the knack but this outing will help you. it helped me out last year. unfortunatly im not going to make it up there this year but good luck to all who participate in the outing.

I had some prizes left from unfilled categories so I'm trying to set up a second get together this month.
Again I'm trying to pick another lake for us to try.
