One of my lakes have some nice Perch that move up onto the 6' - 9' flats just before dawn until ~ full sun-up and again from the time the sun touches the horizon in the evening until it's gone and are hungry. Dinks may be around all day but the big ones head deep in between. Have no idea why only on that lake all winter and not on others, but don't mind it abit. Get near ice out and the flats near reeds are crazy in my area, leave the fat girls alone.

As the ice seasons goes on more and more perch will show up in the shallows. That's the time to go to really get some big perch in the shallows.#'s and big ones this time of the year.

Up until this year we've always fished in 15-20 ft of water and caught tons of perch.  Only thing is that they were all small.
This year we have been going shallower and shallower each trip and finding bigger and bigger perch.  Saturday, we were just under 10ft of water and caught a lot of big perch (big for NM).

Some of the shallow/deep locations issues are directly related to individual lakes; like the weeds sandy bottom discussion. Find their favorite food and you will probably be on the fish. As a rule perch tend to move towards the shallows right before they spawn. Most lakes I fish this happens from early March till ice out. If you want a good future crop, remember not to kill too many big spawning females.
