I just put trilene micro ice on my rods.  If all you're fishing for is perch and crappie you can use a lot lighter test.  If there's a chance at some nice walleye when you're jigging though its nice to have something a little heavier

I don't use anything heavier than 4pd and usually use suffix ice line.

I fish some very heavy cover and light lines just does not work.  If you can not turn a fish and not allow any kind of run you have lost everything not just the fish. So I very what I use according to the structure and other factors.  So I can not say I do just one line for all fishing.

My first post here - gotta get the three done so I can use the check local conditions page!

I've used lots of different lines over the years, and mostly have settled on Northland Bionic Ice clear line.  Holds up well, little memory, ties nice knots, and does not accumulate a lot of ice.  4 lb is my usual stuff, occasionally go larger if I drive somewhere to chase lakers or big walleye.

X 2 on the Bionic Ice.  I like it alot...
Most major brand ice lines will work.
lb. test depends on the target and conditions.

I agree with the general group advice.  Any quality brand, 4lb test that is super limber.

I use Cabelas Pro line 4# year around. I only use ultra lights for summer fishing and have caught big 4# bass, many nice pike and a couple 19# catfish and countless other walleyes and panfish on the 4# line and as long as you take your time and fight the fish and not horse them in you will be surprised what you can catch on light line. Same with ice fishing I caught a 16# catfish on a small ice pole with 4# line and worked just fine. Just don't try to lift the fish out of the water thru the hole.

I'm getting ready to put some new Berkley FireLine fused crystal on all my ice fishing reels.  I've been using it the last two seasons and I'm very happy with it.  Comes off the reel smooth and straight and gets down in deep water fast.

The fireline stealth seems to work really well even though it is not technically an ice line. If you wanted 6-8lb for perch and crappie you may have to spend a little more $ and look at the nano fill. You can get 8lb nano fill that is stronger and smaller in diameter that 2lb mono or fluro. I haven't used it yet but probably next yr!

I've also used the Tectan for many years.  Amazingly thin with an accurate pound test rating.

I fish for lakers mostly, but I have had good luck with p-line floroice in 5lb had a friend bring in a 12 lb trout on 5lb test last feb.  I even used it last spring to haul in plenty of 3-5 lb fishing from the bank...I tried Cajun red line last year, but it froze up too bad in the real cold weather.
