Not that I fish it but I will bet Canobie opens up next week..
Title: Re: Ice out
Post by: jigmaster5 on Feb 25, 2020, 03:59 PM
Canobie always open up fast....maybe the fastest in NH?  Amazing how fast it goes.  Lakes Region will be still be icefishing for many more weeks after Canobie goes out...

Spot Pond in Stoneham, MA is wide open....as you move closer to the NH border ice is fading fast....so it won't be long for Canobie.

I was on 13-14" of ice up past Tilton this weekend.  Plenty of snow cover, too.  Guys with trucks on the ice + double-decker ice houses.  I don't see that going anywhere fast (but you won't see me driving my truck on the lakes).

whenever it goes...be careful....its crappy ice and only half the usual thickness. Wont take much to make it wonky ice... we been on two layers of ice all season or total mush at times. and we are at 1500' . will be moving the bobhouse...oh and the rotisserie, to the boat launch cove pretty darn soon... we'll still fish from there until...the end..my friends...yeeehaw... how about those monster lakers this season...impressive!

Iced Out on Cobbetts Pond in Windham today
Title: Re: Ice out
Post by: Guinea on Feb 28, 2020, 08:32 PM
Wow, Cobbetts opened up? Yeah, it is very weird this year and caution is definitely key!

I haven't ventured far from my usual stomping grounds that I'm more aware of because of that.

Merk, I believe wonky is the right word. A lady I work with uses that word frequently. :) When she does, I realize that was the word I was looking for. I will definitely use it in a sentence tomorrow.

Post by: jigmaster5 on Mar 01, 2020, 05:20 AM
Canobie is 50/50. Will be close to 100% open by next weekend.

Cobbetts is 100% open as far as I could see.

It's coming up 93.

Plan on heading north if u want better ice.

We had about 20" today not far from the lakes region. A lot of sketchy spots out there, though.

Am I the southern city folk?  I guess so.  I'm not "anxious to end the season" - just reporting what I see to save people a trip.

I was on 13-14" north of Tilton last weekend (didn't fish this w/e).  I'm sure Lakes Region will have fishable ice for a while.

Tight lines.

Between the rain last night and the wind today we may have lost ice today. The south facing shores are are starting to let go, in central lakes region. Forecast is for days in the 40’s and nights in the 20’s, the next week.

Some houses have been taken off the ice.

Stuff is opening up around me quick... At least 1 more trip this weekend on the ice for sure but it's tough to not start thinking about the boat with temps in the 60s the other day. Big jerk baits for me early open water, but I dig the ole silver buddy as well.

they do, I get them in 160' of water 5 miles off the beach when they spawn, unfortunately any  easterly wind makes the inlet treacherous, any kind of wind is just plain miserable.jigging ( real jigging not this 2lb test stuff) is the best way to put a bunch in the boat in a hurry, and to add insult to insult , as soon as the draggers know they are there, they scoop up every last one of them..

soon as the water reaches 50, Ill start looking for flounder and drop my lobster pots...bass will begin  to show and summer will be here before I know it.

I hear ya, but I already spend 4 hours each ( round )trip on the road.. not quite ready to make it, 6 when I can trailer the boat for 20 minutes and be fishing..

I'll be driving every day next week except for Friday.. 24 hours of driving.. that'll be enough for me to be ready for open water.

It's amazing how the wind can appear from nowhere in an instant... I've gone out of Rye harbor twice in my bassboat, the 1st time we got lucky and it stayed quiet and glassy water, the 2nd time we launched in the dead calm and an hour later mother nature smacked me in the head asking if I was stupid or something bringing a bassboat out there... The most scared I've ever been on a boat...

No I hear ya there. That's alot of driving. I just always hate when my ice season is cut short(which seems to be more often these days with the weather).
These days in my life, I ice fish waayy more than I open water fish(wasn't always that way). Winter is my downtime at work, it's when I have the most free time throughout the whole year. Once open water season gets here, im back to 60 hour weeks and little time to fish. So I always hate to see Ice season go.
Once ice season is over, I look forward to hunting season.

This is the first year in a decade that I was not able to ice fish in RI. This is the first year that some of my go to's in MA never had enough ice to stay safe. I drove north more than ever and I also filled my freezer with rabbits and squirrels. I too feel robbed but I improvised the best I could to stay active.

I've watched all of our salt water fisheries as they slowly dissapeared,  I remember  catching 20 lb pollock from the merrimack river jetties in the spring, and jigging cod fish from the mouth of the river all winter when conditions allowed, on any given night, you could catch enough cod from the beach in mid winter for a few meals...

It's sad, I got in just on the tail end of all of it..the pollock would come into the river in big schools like blue fish, you could see them on the top chasing sand eels, like a big black cloud, we used to huck 3 ounce cast masters and crank them as fast as we could, the hit was vicious, you know how they fight on a boat, imagine from the jetty fighting a 3 knot tide.., I was a teen ager at the time..by the time I was 20, the only pollock that visited the river were small harbor pollock..they used to go all the way to Joppa, they would stop at the tide rip in front of the duck blind on the west side just above the dike.. now even they are gone..

the cod fishing from the beach was over by the late 70's,. a lot of people  jigged the cod from tin boats, it slowed down in January and February, but was in full swing again by Easter, the most important thing was to get off the river before the ice came down on the out going.. I ignored that once and ended up beaching the boat on Salisbury beach with 400lbs of codfish on the floor.... that fishing lasted into the early 80's.. and now we cant even fish for them...

Back in the day, that was my dad’s place too...he and a friend would be gone all night in my dad’s friends’s thompson boatand they would return to Lawrence in the morning...between the mighty Mac and the Plum Island areas, they did well! By the mid 70’s my dad had his own boat (he bought a new White hull and built a small cabin on it, all mahogany) and we kids got to go. He would run the boat up the river out to the mouth and drift back as we drifted sea worms...schoolies were legal then and some great memories resulted from those nights! Some scary moments with that river but my dad managed those incoming swells like a pro. Very easy to make a mistake out there with dire consequences! Listening to your striper and salt experiences brings it all back!

Oh yeah, same with the wool mills, green, yellow,  red.. and that was'nt the worst part, the water had so much dissolved toilet paper that you had to clean it off your line every 6 to 10 casts.. your line always had a greasy film on it, and it stunk like a backed up sewer.

Definitely appreciate hearing the old salt stories! Joe, you're fortunate that you experienced as much as you have and still make the most of what's left. I happen to know that it's not all fun and games. A lot of work goes along with fishing the salt.
Stealth, you're lucky you're able to tell the story. The salt can be cruel and must be respected.

It lingered into the 80s although the fish were small and length limit was increased until nothing caught was legal.

I remember seeing guys fishing the shore inside the mouth by the old coast guard station in April with rope stringers full of eating size cod fish. I was a teenager and didn't try until a bit later (late 80s) when action and size were less impressive.
That was around the time schoolie bass first started showing up in catchable numbers in May. By that time pretty much all the cod were shorts.

Took my bobhouse off of Newfound yesterday...sad day and way too early. Removed 3 bobhouses in total, loaded onto the trailers, tied down and sent home. Everyone is off the ice safely.

Not done ice fishing yet, will go out on open ice or portable if the wife is with me. Btw, season (Lake Trout) doesn't end till April 1st folks.

Started my season Nov 17th (early ice) and will keep going until no ice or cant get on with a homemade bridge. Haven't missed a weekend of fishing since i got onto ice and actually took more time off during the week due to ice conditions in order to get my time in (full season) due to poor ice conditions.

Cant believe some are wishing the ice away so early.....those are probably the ones "itching" to get onto (early) ice and then loose interest shortly afterwards?.....OCD?

Stay safe if you continue to ice fish, use your chisel. It's a must with the conditions.

Same here, been every week since we were safely able to... unfortunately lunches have been way better than the fishing.. bobhouse may come home Wed, then will continue to fish. just will shift to the portable grill.

Good to hear you're making the most of this season, Jiggin.
There's almost always some opportunity to  fish, here in NH if one really wants to.

Think it ends the day before? Fortunately, open water season starts the first.  ;D You may be able to slide from one to the other this year?

You got that right Mike! It’s the same fools catching concrete jungle liver pellet powered trout first ice chomping at the bit posting non stop thennnnn those fish get caught and you haveto actually know how to fish and they leave lollll jokers. The killer is they think they’re heroes when most with knowledge haven’t tried yet or just hit it hard and end hard like most left on here

Prove me wrong!

Was in the Plymouth area on Saturday and was worried about getting on the ice. To my surprise when we got there we found 14+ inches of junky soft ice but frozen all the way around, access was perfect. Was thinking that would be my last trip of the year but after seeing that much ice keeping my fingers crossed I can get out this weekend too!!

Sorry fellas but after taking the hound for a run around a completely open small pond in temple yesterday in a t-shirt it's tough to not start thinking about the boat and some top water blow ups... Maybe I'm in the clear though, I've never chased an early ice concrete jungle, liver pellet fed trout lol...

I don't even know what to say, Frank, except that this Deep Devil I have right now must taste so much better lol.

I'm calling it for the season, unfortunately. Everything around here looks iffy, and scouting isn't in the cards right now. I still have 11 bait fish, and I see some open water on some year round places, so I might try it with the rod. I was thinking of employing a bobber to keep the bait suspended and swimming. Does that make sense, or is there another tactic that would work better?

That sounds much better!

Your tactic will work fine anywhere it’s legal.

Up north here guys will put the shiner on a hook and stick the hook on the end of pvc pipe and keep adding extensions to it until the get to there desired distance under the ice from the open shoreline then pull the pvc pipe back in as it leaves the bait out there. Works slick

Nope, that's the top 4"of ice, I could take it into a pile with my foot...we are loosing g ice from both sides now, old holes are draining making huge spider webs, the wheeler broke through getting off the lake yesterday....took a day of rest today, only got 4 smallies 1 white and a yellow yesterday, dark to dark, going to regroup for the final few days...on foot..Saturday, will be it IF  I can get on the lake without  a plank..because this old man doesn't walk one.

Where the heck did you find one in youth? I've been looking for that same gun to no avail. I've got a chance to grab a mossy super bantam 500 youth for my son. Like I was telling you a few weekends ago, I have a h+r pardner, but being a single shot, it still packs a wollop. Great gun but he needs something choked down for turkeys as well.

Frank, I really empathized with your situation last year, more than you know! It's amazing how tentative health and life can be. I can appreciate how you must have felt at your age, not knowing if you'd walk again.
Crazy to think about what's going on right now! If I was your daughter's age, I couldn't imagine giving up a season. But then again, the NBA's done for the  year. NCAA final, no fans, live crowds watching? Heard Exeter high shut down, maybe Oyster River, soon? UNH and many other colleges taking extended breaks. Not knowing what the world's near future will bring?
Probably a bad analogy, but I remember when Y2K was going to end things as we know them?
We will overcome!

I have already reached out locally to any children who may need food or a safe home in the next few weeks. I have worked my ass off this last year to get back on top. I have 2 more kids here tonight on top of my own because they are running low on supplies bc people cleaned stores out. Everyone needs to relax and take it easy. It’s becoming scary here locally. Not because of the fear of sickness but because of the panic mostly grown from ill prepared people who have gotten so far away from our roots they cannot survive unless things are handed to them. Democratic Party is a S show right now looking for votes, coincidence? I think not! Your vulnerability is there votes to get them to living the dream, don’t get it twisted

Frank is there still beer?

Nice pic, good luck, hope that thing goes off for ya...
Spent my morning checking boat launches, found a few that are just about ready... Stopped along side the river and got my 1st long rod casts of the season, nothing was interested though. Beauty day out there...

Geez, guy, we need to have a heart to heart about beer choices.

At least if people panic buy beer, I will still be able to find porter lol.

Picked up a case of wine, 96 bottles of Molson, and 20  + spools of line to refill reels.

I am retired, my stocks are a mess, IRA is ugly, but the good side is I am ready for open water fishing.

Note: I purchased a new Old Town Sportsman 120 pdl kayak and should have it by early April. Until then I will be shore and river fishing

I am ready
John

Yeah, I drink it Irish drunk style. 14 Makers Marks in a night need to have some water to keep hydrated.
