IMPORTANT info about the MOST PERCH Category.
Over the past two years we have received comments/questions with regards to this category.  The incentive for creating this category was to attempt to diminish the perch population. Perch have a major negative impact on other species of fish.  This is supported by Maine IF&W.

For the past 6-7 years we have allowed groups of people REGARDLESS OF AGE, to pool their perch catch as long as every participant in the group has REGISTERED FOR THE DERBY.

AGAIN....PEOPLE CAN WORK TOGETHER TO GET THE MOST PERCH....REGARDLESS OF AGE.

PLEASE SHARE.

People are asking for ice conditions. Number one people will have to be cautious. A pick up went through Long Lake this weekend. The shacks that are on Long Lake right now are portable shacks, but these are only in the coves.
We know Glazier Lake is still open in the middle. We assume Beau Lake is the same.
Long Lake has 5 inches of ice in some places we assume Eagle Lake is the same. The middle is sketchy.
Pray for cold weather in the next three weeks.
Don’t rely on anyone’s advice. Check the ice yourself.

It's January, but that doesn't mean the ice is safe. Ice conditions vary across the state, and even across a single water body. Don't rely on why you've heard from others. The only way to know if the ice is safe is to check it yourself.
Here are some important reminders from the Maine Warden Service about checking ice conditions:
Accessing lakes and ponds should be avoided unless you can be certain of ice conditions by checking ice thickness for yourself. Before stepping out, use a chisel or auger to test ice thickness in several places.
Remember that ice seldom freezes uniformly and conditions are always changing and can vary from one location to the next. Ice that forms over flowing water and currents, especially near streams, bridges, and culverts, can be particularly dangerous.
Know that a fresh coat of snow can hide potentially hazardous areas – use caution.

Always have a pair of ice safety picks in an easy to grab spot should you break through.
Use caution, but have fun! Winter is a wonderful time to recreate outside in Maine.
Remember it is always best to go out with a partner rather than alone and make sure to leave information with friends or family about your plans for the day and when you plan to return.
