What tip up style do you like better
« on: Sep 18, 2011, 03:44 PM »
I like the cross leg style, its more traditional looking. I have used the parallel style but it sat to low and didnt like the look. Give opinions and pic of you would like.

Prefer parallel myself but have both types.

i used the parallels for years, had less wind ups and they seemed less likely to break.  i have since switched to the round ones, and have fallen in love with them.  but between your choices i'd go parallel.

I have tried most everything available from home made X frames to the insulated round traps, for me personally, I like to be able to see if the fish is running ! I got a chance to try the Frabill Arctic fire rail tip ups for panfish and they do the job for me. I have been searching for the Frabill Bigfoot classic tip ups for a couple seasons now, I really like the extendable Over sized flags, Extra long spool shaft with the 500 yard metal spools ! My new Bigfoot order is on its way and the ice can't form fast enough for me now !  :roflmao:

I grew up with the more traditional type tip-ups, like the Heritage. But I do have a couple of the Polar types and always mix them in the spread.

I have 10 crossed legged traditionals and 2 horizontal polars. I like the old cross legged traditionals better, the reels have no drag unlike the Polars. Every time I use my Polars they freeze up even with subzero lube on them.

I own a bunch of sets but the polars are the ones that get used. They are tricky to spot at times but watching that top scream around is worth it. I can also pick up all 6 and slam them in bucket before the wife calls a second time.

I use the ladder or H style 31" Jacks.  I find the H style stores more compactly and I don't have any issues with visability with the high flags.  Before these, I used Polars and their lack of visability was a pain.  Between snowmobiles and blowing and deep snow, it was an issue.

I have used Beaver Dams for the past several years, I guess it's what I'm used to. No complaints.

I like the cross leg style more, I just feel like there is better flag visibility and the spool is positioned much better than parallel traps.

Polar Style are my preference. Seem to encounter fewer unexpected issues with them. Nice to be able to adjust the tension for bigger baits without tripping the flag too. Plus the tip-up pagers secure much better to the Polar style.

I never liked the guide on the Frabil...it always makes it a royal pain to wind the line back up at the end of the day.  I like to keep the spools tight, and its much harder with that line guide...

Sometimes the lakers can be located in deep water anywhere from 40 to70 FOW, thats a lot of winding at the end of the day !  ;D

I prefer the round ones that insulate the hole.  Seem to catch more fish with them.  Also light is blocked from entering the hole.

I also switched from polars to heritage lakers and will never go back to polars because of the lack of visibility.  I miss seeing the t spin and when I first set up the heritage lakers a few years back I used all black or all white line and even when I got to the hole it was hard to see if the fish was running.  I solved that by switching to a dacron line that is speckled red white and blue........now I can at least look down the hole and see how fast the spool is turning!

Heritage Lakers are the best bang for the buck!

You can also paint little white dots on the side of the black spool and you have accomplished the same thing ;D

I use foam hole covers with my Frabill Arctic Fire and bigfoot classic rail tip ups, it keeps my holes from freezing ! I like being able to see the trips spinning without having to clear snow, ice or slush from the hole ! I have never had an issue with visability, even if the snow is 2 foot deep, the 36" tall flags on the bigfoots show up plain as day.

They all work, and I have tried most of them.  I like any of the kind with the shaft that spinns when the line goes out.  Its important to me to see if the fish is running or not.

I have had nothing but problems with these types of tip-ups. They constantly freeze up on me. Any idea what might be wrong? I might use the damn thing for firewood soon!

yes I'm not to fond of that style after you put your minnow on and set the flag your skin freezes to them.
last year gander had the big + style wooden tip up I got 4 of them.
Now our gander is gone :'( and the web site don't have them. I would like a few more.

Warmer that 20 degrees or so one word WINDLASS! Colder nothing better than the beaver dam. I have all the kinds when I take people who don't have equipment they get to learn a bunch!
Tight lines and safe fishing.
