Seasonal Temps & Ice!
« on: Nov 26, 2016, 07:16 PM »
If you go by the monthly forecast for Northern IN it looks as if temps will almost consistently be in the high 30's or less following 12/7. My question is  at what temperature range does it have to be consistently to start forming ice? I obviously know that ice freezes at 32F but if daytime temps reach the high 30's for a few hours does it really effect much?

I found this to be pretty interesting and somewhat accurate, considering all of the variables. It is worth a look...

Highs in the 30s and lows in the upper teens won't form much ice when you throw in snow or wind. For most bodies of water it will take a real cold blast with clear calm nights for a few days to get a good safe base going. I think its hard to forecast those conditions much ahead of time. What you see in the past seven day forecast are mostly avg's with what forecasters predict should happen. My opinion is we will not see ice form in the first 7 days of DEC. I'll stick with my guess of the first week in January.
