ALL QUIET ALONG THE HOMEFRONT
« on: Feb 21, 2011, 12:26 PM »
This time of year is when we hear about the unthinkable. SOMEONE FALLS IN. Good to know there haven't been any unfortunates here (yet). Lets keep it that way. BE SMART, TAKE A BUDDY, TAKE NNNNOOOOO CHANCES. IF IT DOESN"T SEEM SAFE GET OFF. Soft water will be here soon enough.

Mushrooms look great, yum yum. That brings up my question. Until last year I have never found more than I could eat, last year I did so I tried freezing some. I must have done something wrong cause they don't taste good. Maybe soaking them in salt water was the problem I don't have a clue.

First I cut them in half and cleaned with water, soaked them in salt water over night, then dried them a little and breaded them. Then I put them on a flat pan and froze in fridge. When froze I put them in a sealed plastic bag, tried to remove as much air as I could. A month later when I cooked some they tasted funny, didn 't taste that great. If I ever find to many again I think I will try drying them before freezing.

Next time don't soak them. Cut them in half then dehydrate. After dry, freeze. Wash them when you are ready to re-hydrate them. Granted they won't taste as good as fresh. They will still be delicious in mid-winter cooking.

Been there done that. I have been known to eat 2 pounds at one time. YUMMY Don't find all that much time looking for shrooms when the crappie and wallies are biting.

At 25 bucks a pound....its hard to put extras in freezer. Ther aint much better than fresh shrooms, and crappie. Crappie are biting at bville. Buddy caught some today till his hands went to ice. Said there was only 1 other boat ob the lake.....gamewarden testing boat...

How do you dehyrate them, air or do you have a dehyrateing machine. Ill have to do that if I ever get to many, lucky the wife doesn't eat them. Then again last year was the first I ever had enough left to freeze. Probably won't happen again. I did find one last package in the freezer so I decided to fry them up. Not as good as fresh but better than nothing.
