Yukon circle trip. (Pic heavy)
« on: Jan 14, 2009, 01:21 AM »
Tbone, Fish-slayer and I decide to head up to the Yukon in search of some big pike. Head out at 4 am from Prince George.
Here is the VW loaded with 3 guys and all our gear. Also filled bin on roof rack (Cheaper than Thule  ;D)

Head west from Prince George and head up highway 37 (Stewart Cassiar hwy). Road was snow packed with slippery sections.

Hit Kitwanga and head north

Weather is snowy until we pass Iskut and then the sky cleared in the late afternoon

Then it gets dark at 4 pm and we continue north to Alaska highway then head west dipping back and forth over the BC Yukon border.

We run into this on road.....look its a sasquatch....naw just a ghost ;D

Arrive in Teslin at 10:30pm

Bunk down for the night after 18 hour drive.

Next morning we head out in a chilly -47 with wind chill and -41 without.  Looking for areas to hit...."I said heh look there is someone fishing out there, lets check it out"....

NO WAY IT CAN'T BE BILL DANCE ALL THE WAY UP HERE :-\

No its the ice man from Teslin. Very nice fellow named Deke who is the icefishing guru up there.
Sure looked like Bill Dance though

Pics from fishing
Me inside icecube

Fish-slayer lands a small Wyoming sized laker

Tbone gets a nice 5lb burbot

Fish-slayer lands an innconu

Fish froze very quickly in these cold temps

It warmed to -25 on our last day there and that seemed real nice after what we had fished in.

Head home and it was snowing alot so made going slow.
Head east on Alaska highway towards Fort Nelson.
Many animals were seen including caribou.

This caribou must have left an impression on Tbone....he jumed over the snowbank and poof sunk into the powdery snow. Reminded Tbone of a cannonball he told us.

Lots of moose

Signs on road told us to slow down as buffalo on road.....Came around a few corners and thought a vehicle was in ditch....Not....just a couple big buffalo

Also some elk

And some wolves but they were to quick for the camera

Hit Liard Hot Springs which was very cool with the steam from it icing the surrounding trees with snow on.

Tbone decides to take a dip. Goes into the unheated (-21) change room and comes running out and yells "Cannonball"

Look at the look on his face...."Oh No its awefully shallow. I don't know about this"

After a warm dip he sprints back to change room then sprints the 300 yards back to the car

All in all it was a fun time with one day producing 30 pike when we concentrated on them. Had a few monsters break us off but thats fishing.

Definately will be hitting there in the summer. Seen some pics of 48 inch pike :P

That small innconu will be enjoyed by fish-slayers family. I will let him comment on taste :P

Tbone wasn't in very long because we had to keep motoring. Was 19.5 hour trip coming back. However we overnighted in Fort St John.

Any guesses on what that ghost pic is?

It was either a Samsquatch or the Ghost of Fishmas Present!!!!  ;D

Now you know the kind of weather I have been dealing with since mid November!!!!  >:(
Good thing you were all warm and toasty in your hut though!!!  ::)
Propane heaters don't work at those temps.
Getting out his weekend though, it's going to be like spring!!!!!   :icefish:

PS how do coneys fight under the ice?
I've caught tons in the summer but never in the winter.

WOW that looked so very cool and bloody cold. Yah I miss icefishing bigtime buy there's something to be said about temps of 6,7,8 celsius in Canada at this time of year. On Vancouver Island you start thinking about spring real fast here. You guys are fishing in -40's and I'll be finishing up planting here soon from the fall when we got a dump of snow to screw up my plans.

That would be one hell of a trip and to have pike action like that would warm yah up a bit.

Thanks for posting. Oh yah strange deal with that one ghostly pic.
Need some ice imported to Southern Vancouver Island

Great post Terry!

Great pics - that is quite the drive you guys took :o.  Looks like a good time though.

3 guys plus gear to be out in those temps, all in a VW Golf!!!  I guess you didn't bring a lot of "extras"

See you out there!

Yep.
Inconnu is the Canadian name for the fish.
It is a French Canadian name meaning Unknown.
