Water in shanty
« on: Jan 13, 2009, 06:36 PM »
I have been fishing recently with a friend who has a clam flip over model.  We have been using his, due to larger size than the clam 2000 that I have.  However, when we fish the area in in front of the holes becomes a lake on top of the ice.  Does anyone else have this problem, and if so, what do you do to fix this?  I never had to worry about it with mine, due to the full floor design.

Nothing to do with the shanty. I bet you have allot of snow on the ice.
The charm of fishing is that it is the pursuit of what is elusive but attainable, a perpetual series of occasions for hope.

We shoveled the area out that we were in.  He said he had the same issues last year with it being real slushy.  Sure enough there was nearly 1/2" of water on top of the ice after about an hour.  There is only about 3-4" of snow on the top of the lake right now.

It's the weight of the snow pushing the ice down. I drill a buncha holes not all the way through, but part way, so they become like big cups, and all the water gets captured in the holes.  Did it this weekend, had two holes for fishin, and mabey 4 or 5 reservoirs to hold the flood water

I'll bet you either have a heater or it's a combination of body heat and sun in an enclosed hut  giving off just enough heat to melt the snow and ice .
It's quite common .

I shovel out the entire area, so the only water is coming from the lake, not snow melt

I find it better to not shovel a clear spot when this happens. I think if you shovel, you are giving a spot for water to run to.

Had this problem in Chaumont Bay this weekend, tons of snow, wheelers, sleds, people, etc. on the ice. I stopped shoveling my fishing area off and the snow soaked up whatever water came through. Its no fun dropping a minnow in 3 inches of water in your shanty and having to chase the little bugger around.

was in my buddies clam hub the other day on 11" of ice with about 5" of snow with a little heater and a lantern and we had minnows swimming around by our feet that we had dropped.

I'm willing to bet this guy is on the money.

Next time don't shovel the area.  Try going on top of the snow.

I wont shovel the area, and try it out. Im sure the snow and the resovoirs will keep my feet dry.
