"Fake" maggots...anyone tried 'em?
« on: Jan 02, 2009, 03:51 PM »
OK I am a bit squeamish about bugs in general so I was thrilled when my hubby found fake maggots for me to use .... haven't used them yet.  Any reports on if the fish are as hungry (or as dumb?) as some people think they are?  Thanks in advance - Angie

I've used them in open water situations...tipping a jig with them....they work ...especially if they are really on a good bite. But in my opinion not as well as bee moth , etc.....

If you're refering to Berkley's I've used them. They're not as good as the real thing but they do catch fish.
I mainly carry them for a " back up " just in case the bait shop is out.

How much do you guys pay for spikes? (Live ones)

Yes it sounds weird but another hobby of mine is breeding scorpions.  I know a guy from the southwest who owns a business that collects spider/scorpion venom to sell to the medical community.  I have received a few packages from him in the past and in one, as a "gift", was a bunch of spikes.  If his prices are any less I will post a link for you guys.

I have never had good luck with artificials through the ice but I would think if they were soaked in some sort of scent that would help.

They work in most cases where live maggots work but sometimes there is no substitute for the real thing.
I have a can in my kit for backup when I run out of the live stuff.

If you are squeamish about worms I say buy them and use them, they work.

I agree with Lonewolf they are only good as a backup the label claims they outfish livebait never seen it happen fish have a specific smell of certain critters and this isn't it.

I bought a jar when I couldn't get waxies, and they seemed to work pretty good. I keep them in my bucket for a backup, but I still prefer the real thing. I bought a little jar of those worm things for my wife to use open water, she don't like nightcrawlers or leeches, and she catches about as many as I do.

They do work , I use them as back up or a change up to give the fish. Different colors that they come in. On a couple of times they've saved the day and atleast I caught dinner for that night.

Berkley gulp stuff has the jar with the liquid where you can reuse them after you fish with them .

Good Luck 8)

I use the powerbait ones a lot, but I use them with a waxie.  Usually a powerbait on each side of one waxie for crappie.  it protects the grub and allows you to catch many more fish without re-baiting.  Keeps the action fast while the bite is on.

I've caught fish on them but I can't say I'm overly impressed. Like everyone else, I keep them as a backup.

Actually the Berkley maggots - using three on a jig proved to be a real hot setup for bluegills last fall. Perch preferred a small piece of "orange" scented worm tipped on a jig. The nice part is how durable the scented baits are compared to live bait. Have a supply of live wax worms ready for ice fishing but will have the above handy should the day find there use needed.

Sounds like I will be using more powerbait.  Just got a note that the local distributor's supply of waxies is gone... 4 weeks for more to be produced.

i tried some gulp maggots last year through the ice. got some perch and gills. was a tough bite and compared to waxies was 50-50. tried em in open water and couldn't buy a bite. i'll take 'em along. don't take up much room, and they won't die on you.

How much do they cost? (The waxies)

Like I said, I know a guy who breeds then because they are a staple for certain species of young south western tarantulas and spiders.  He provides venom for medical research and has thousands and thousands of mouths to feed so I assume he breeds them by the hundreds of thousands or millions.

I am pretty sure they are medical grade.  When he sent me the pupae they were in a fine mesh bag with what appeared to be a startch type powder. The guy is legit and they may be cheaper.

I mainly use live bait but bought some gulp maggots and filled my bucket with gills. Might have just been a lucky day but they out fished waxies and spikes 3-1 that day (1-1-09)

Last batch I got was $5.50 for 100 of them.

I've tried them..they're delicious.   ;D

Actually, I've used the tiny berkley crappie candy.  I put a small ball on the jig and push it all the way to the back and then tip with a spike or two. I've had luck with both gills and crappie in the past.   I think it can't hurt to have the smell there to entice the bite?

Spikes are maggots and waxies are wax moth larvae correct?  If so then they are spikes.

I will have to e-mail him again because the price list he sent me is for pupae (after the larval stage).  If he is willing to sell spikes maybe they will be just as cheap as the pupae.

The pupae cost,
1 gram $1.45
10 grams $1.95
100 grams $5.00
1 kg $39.95

1 g (gram): ~50 pupae
10 g: ~500 pupae
100 gs: ~5,000 pupae
1 kg (kilogram): ~50,000 pupae

Ps, BBK, I looked over my old post and realized I said waxies.. I meant spikes.

Fishing with Yaz and jjt the past several days. Both tried the gulp baits and they did not have much success util they switched over to live bait. I guess success with them depends on a combination of things...the lake/the targeted species/and how the bite is that day. Of course on day one the bite was there and fairly consistant yet they falied to catch anything using the gulp.

gulp waxworms and smellyjelly work almost as well as live. the smellyjelly is the key here. I like to use walleye fest or salt and shrimp. good luck out there
Take a kid fishing, they make great pack mules.

I use the Gulp Alive waxies and this past weekend my buddy and I put them to the test. He was using real waxies.  Side by side I out caught him 3 to 1.  maybe I was just lucky?? Always have used live waxies with great sucess but have the Gulp ones for backup

Using the Berkely Waxies (various colors) and have been hitting the Perch and Bluegills very good.  I have a hike to get to the bait shop and the wife doesn't like the critters in the fridge, so having the fake ones has worked out great.
