Fly Tying patterns through the ice?
« on: Dec 09, 2008, 10:32 PM »
There are a lot of nymph patterns used to flyfish for trout along with various sizes.  Size 22 through size 10 or larger.  Anyone use any specific tied fly patterns through the ice vs just using lead/tungsten jigs?  Anyone care to discribe or have any pictures of your favorite pattern(s)?

Last year I tied up some jigs with small flash tail and then a wrapped mcfly foam body. you can make it hundreds of color combos and they worked just fine

I just tied up a few with tungsten beads to try this winter. Last year I tried some with brass beads and lead wrapped and even before I try the tungsten ones I can tell they will work better for the depth I fish. They feel very heavy. The others would work OK but were too light.
I used size 12 and 14 hooks with a little lead to build up the body behind the bead. I did some simple green and white bodies with a few strands of calf tail for a tail, I also wrapped a few with red vinyl rib to look like a blood worm. Hopefully they will work.

Used a small hair jig last year with great success, 1/80 oz. head, black calf tail body, and black or pink head tipped with 1 spike, got some real nice gills on it.
Have used some size 12 trout nymphs before, olive, black or brown in color, tied in above your bottom jig.
Nice thing about them is you dont have to add any meat to them, and gills, crappie and perch still eat'em.

Never hurts to keep a few scud(freshwater shrimp) patterns in your jig box.  Just fish them below a jig with some weight to get them down.

there is the link to the ones i use.  I don't have the time to tie them any more
and for what you can buy them for, its just not worth it to me.
