Any ice for this coming weekend?
« on: Mar 24, 2008, 09:46 AM »
Anyone planning on fishing this coming Saturday? I'm looking for ice, I don't want to hang up the traps just yet.

I found borderline safe ice up in Westford on Saturday, but I think it may be time to hang em up for the season, unless there is safe ice out in western Mass or up north in NH.
The biggest problem won't be the thickness as it will be the consistancy.
Westford had 7-9 inches of frozen SLUSH, which is probably the weakest type of ice.
I don't know the exact saying, but for me when the ice turns grey, it's time to stay away.
Because of the type of winter we had, we got almost as much , if not more, rain than snow.
That meant that when the temps started to rise, the conditions were going to deteriorate quickly towards the end of the season. I don't think there will be much, if any, safe ice south of the NH border by next week.

I decided to pass. I put the gear away tonight. Good luck this weekend, I'm chasing the trout until the stripers come in.

We checked it at 4:00 today.  Still ice but edges are pretty bad.  A few places to get on but going fast.  Much of shore is broken.

My brother lives in Moultonborough, NH up in the Winni region, and the reports are that they still have solid ice in a lot of the lake's bays and coves.
I think I have at least 1 more trip in me this weekend.
