Think crawfish in winter are strange , well .....
« on: Mar 11, 2008, 09:04 AM »
I have a small <1/8 acre> pond on my land with 4 species  of shiners       . Come september, i could walk across the pond there were so many . So, i figure i'm set for this winter . This past January i set my trap twice . Both times no shiners but had salamanders . Never saw one in winter before. Don't know what the heck happened to my shiners as there were zillions of 'em in the fall.

Well, i don't think it's oxy cause salamanders need cleaner oxegenated water than shiners . I was using same as summer bait which was dry dog food .  ???

sometimes in winter the go in the mud and kinda hibrnate. check after ice out and you'll find they are still there. if a pickeral or bass gets in there forget it. good luck. always wanted my own shinner pond.

I do some vernal pool surveys in the spring, salamanders can breed in some pretty disgusting, polluted, oxygen depleted pools.  What kind of salamanders were they? Yellow or Blue spotted? redback?

This time of year I get most of my shiners right under the ice and these are very small ponds.
