How many times now???
« on: Feb 17, 2008, 10:02 AM »
Well, for the second time this year I have stepped into a 10" hole. This last time wasn't to bad, I actually was able to recover from it quickly and not get to wet, or hurt. I put up my new shanty and drilled some holes and moved the shanty over the holes. Not knowing that my buddy filled in one of the holes with snow and just walked away, I walked right into it and down I went. He was laughing so hard that he just walked away for a while. When he came back he asked if i was still mad, I was never mad to begin with. So to cut it short, How many if any have you guys stepped in this season?
If fishing was work I'd never be sick!

I know Lenz stepped into a melted out 10" hole while walking to a flag and went into his calf and fell...lucky the hole was larger...may have broke his leg.....I never hit a hole but went through on thin edge while taking care of business...up over my boot but no biggie...there was a rock underneath that stopped the plunge...K

I think you may want to invest in size 14 boots!!..... ;)

I fell through a hole on A-1 a couple of weeks ago. A 10inch hole had just barely frozen over and it was covered with snow. Went up to my knee and almost broke my leg. Long day of fishing with a wet foot.

I dont see the need for 10 inch holes, but then again i've never fished anything bigger than northerns that fit fine through an 8 inch hole, Today was my first time seeing a 10 inch hole, guy was using it for gills, i think that is very ignorant to use such a big auger for gills, especially b/c of how much hopping around and the number of holes you're drilling!

Unless you wanna catch only small ones,  They are not necssary but make everything easier.  The thicker the ice the bigger the hole the easier it is to turn the fish up it and it takes longer for the bigger holes to freeze over.

no reason to ban 10"holes...they are needed for the big species...besides, the difference of 2" doesnt make or break a foot slippin in..

I dont think there is a need to ban them, but they're not an auger hole that should be used when drilling 50-60 holes in an area looking for those gills

I have no interest in banning them, just wanted to test the waters.

To be honest, I am looking for a 10" drill to put on my old 3hp Jiffy if anyone has one for sale....

i was running for a flag and went into an old hidden hole that had to be almost 2' across.Porter was checking it out and started going thru.
if it was smaller i'm sure i would of broken a leg. nice black and blue /sore for a couple of days.

intentionally fillin in a hole and laughing about it isn't cool in my book. i'd harpoon the mook with my spud...

I've been ice fishing for 30+yrs.never stepped in a hole.Fell thru the edges several times. You need to watch where you're
walking!10" hole is a must for big gators with thick ice or when you're using flouro leaders.

Out on 5 mile 2 weeks ago, get to my favorite spot, and someone had hand chieseld 5 holes, stright through the ice, roughly 2 feet by 2 feet, right where i like to fish,  each of these holes only had skim ice on them when i arrived.  If i had arrived during dark, i would easily have gone through.  This was a little irresponsible of the indvidual that chopped these holes.  When another gentleman was leaving the ice, he said that the area he was fishing had the same holes.

Broke through an edge the other day while trying to take care of business but never went up over my boot.  It is an unexpected surprise when it happens but I recovered with my lightning fast reflexes....NOT.    I was glad to not be injured.  We old guys take a long time to heal up and recover.  Got enough of aches and pains already and a long list of meds that I already take.  It's better living through pharmaceuticals.

I always try to watch where I'm walking but one never knows especially after a snowfall.  I suggest we strap a 2x4 across our butts if those size 14s don't work.  Can't say I'm for banning anything, I use a 9" myself.  I would have been happy with an eight but got a great deal a few years back on an end of season sale and grabbed it.   That's my story and I'm stickin' to it.  Besides I always try to keep my foot out of another man's hole.  LOL

Jeeps, that is irresponsible of that person.  Last year on A-1 I encountered a few chiseled holes that were quite large. The only reason I notices them is that the person left the block of ice up on the ice that came out of the holes.

Should 10" holes be banned?

Not on your life!  Like another person here said, Watch where your going! At night, use Light!
I love my 10" strikemaster and you will have to fight me to the death to take it away from me!

Now, for the issue at hand... When I see guys drilling a live well, I ask them not too! It makes for a very dangerous situation. I try ALWAYS, to encourage them to let the fish go but if that don't work, I bring them my chain and offer to let whoever it is, use it!

Most cases though, they are ignorant and tell me to f - off  :o

My response.... Whateva!   ::)

Was out today and found some very dangerous holes on Pontoosuc.  The rain from yesterday had opened up old holes in a few places where we were fishing and they were hidden by crusted over snow and ice.  A dog broke through and almost went under in a 3 foot long hole.  My son's foot went in  another that was long and slender(not from a drill hole).  Be careful since this last rain there are hidden dangers.
