dead bait
« on: Feb 13, 2008, 11:02 AM »
Does anyone have recommendations on dead bait for pike.

Rigs: single treble, quick strike rig, etc.?

Presentation: On the bottom, suspended horizontally, vertically, whole or chunked etc.

Type: native, oilyer the better etc.

I tried dead bait yesterday with no luck.Maybe it was just the day or the spot. The perch seemed to like em though.I had a single hook on.That usually works good for me.

Did you fish them on the bottom or suspended?

sdog,
I just cut & pasted this from a post I made a day or 2 ago:
Quote
Then it'll depend on whether I'm using live or dead bait as far as where in the "water column", I'd place the bait. Always above weeds, if  present. Usually 1 set higher up in the top third of the water column from the weeds/bottom, & 1 set down within the lower 1/3 of the column. If the sets are close to each other, I usually put the live bait low , & the dead high. My reason is that the live bait has both scent & movement & the dead has the sight/profile advantage, & more of the scent & easy pickings presentation.

Of course , nothing is written in stone for me, regarding this, sometimes I change stuff around. It's part of my fishing style, but has done well for Me!

There is a lot of info right here in N.Pike Forum, But using the Search Function  at the top of the page, will give you a lot of info. Just type in "Quick strike", "Dead bait", etc.
It'll keep ya busy for a few ......
Good luck!

Big ciscoes or herring on quick strikes is the best you can get for pike IMO.

the deader the better i like to use whole smelt or herring with a lil scent on it. if im fishing under 10 foot ill put the bait right under the ice and maybe suspend or right off the bottom with one flag. anything over 15ft is going  right above the weeds

I use quick strike's and oily sardines (I buy them at the Asian food store :o)
usually set them at different depths until one of them out-preforms the others, it never seems to be consistent in my area.
The worst day of fishing is still beter than the best day of working

Does anybody know where to get them in the NW Indiana area?
