How deep are the perch your jiging?
« on: Jan 04, 2008, 03:12 PM »
Since the introductory of zebra mussels into our lake via the Great lakes they've become very clear. So the fish went deeper. Perch down to 60 ft and at times even deeper. You have to go to heavier jigs that deep.
When the ice is on. I'm on the ice.

i have caught perch from 4 feet to 26 feet, and every depth in between.  the last couple years we have been hitting the deeper limits and haveing ok success.  maybe in another 10 years i will have figred out what depth to fish what days, (ie early ice, overcast sky's compared to late season sunny skys)  it seems i have caught more jumbos the deeper i was, but i have only been ice fishing for about 5 years.
forever in debt for your priceless advice

mlb1,
You need some tungsten for those deep perch. Smaller size greater weight.

I agree with you.  The clear water has made a big difference.

My first day on the ice this year - 25 perch and 6 rainbows in 2 1/2 hours.  All taken at 8 feet deep.

Was reading the "Ice Team Presents Jumbos!!! Trackin' Down and Poppin' Perch" annual put out this year (came with my new Fish Trap).  The consensus is they are shallow at early ice, migrate deeper towards the middle of the season, then come back up shallow before ice out.

That's been my experience too  ;)

I've cought my share of perch in over 40 ft of water. a 1/2 oz sinker with lightweight flies or willow leaves topped off with a slip bobber with gum bands for a stopper will give you the action needed. Fine tune this method and you will outfish anyone on the ice !!

most the perch i get are shallow early in the morning and late evening 8 to 14 feet threw out the day they move any where from 20 to 50 feet sunny days they move deeper than cloudy same with clear ice and snow covered ice its is just a matter of keeping moving with group of fish don't anchor your self to one spot or depth
early mornings,cold north winds,hard ice,good friends and cold high life..FLAG UP!.priceless

I've caught them in as deep as 75FOW.  Last year I was working schools in 60', and on Friday, the hot spot for jumbos was 40'.  It seems the more shallow water is covered in dinks, so I try to avoid it.

thru the ice so far its been 2- 20 feet. never tried any deeper.   and yes I got perch in 2 FOW in Braddocks bay. never seen it anywhere else.

Open water I have gotten perch in 80 FOW in Seneca lake that never freezes. that lake is so clear and deep that its kinda different...  Perch rarely go more shallow than 15 feet if you can find them that shallow.

I have seen bottom in 45 FOW before its clear there

10 to 15 ft used to be the norm on Seneca Lake. Not any more though! Whene they're that shallow they spook real easy because of the clear water.

Depends on the body of water you're fishing...yesterday 1 lake they were in 7 to 15, another (murkier) pond they were pushed right into this little cove in about 3 to 5'...would prefer to catch them in 3' or less...all depends on the water and the conditions...

35 feet but I had to take home some smaller 7 inchers because of the air bladder problem with deep fish.  Hate that.
