Bartons Cove Gathering Feb 2nd

What:    A gathering of the IceShanty tribe for bass, brats and beer.

When:   Feb 2nd.  Sun up to whenever.  Foul weather date Feb. 9th.

Where:  Bartons cove on the the Conn. River just off of Rt 2 Gill, Ma. at the Power company campground.


I will bring a large propane grill out for communal use.  There is a large parking area that can accommodate 50 + vehicles.  It is an easy commute from anywhere as it is directly off of Rt. 2 in Gill MA just above the Turners Falls dam.  You can expect to catch everything from Perch to Pike and all things in between.  Last year was a great time and this year should be bigger and better.

Merging a couple of threads, this will be the sign up list as well as what you are bringing for food.  I'll amend as more people chime in.

bartons cove is neither lake nor pond. it is part of connecticut river. a large cove just before turners falls.

I will be bringing some sausage peppers and onions like last year.  Since I went home with an empty pot I assume that everyone liked them.  The only thing that worries me is that I did not see any "peppermint patty" next to the Capt. name?   ???

We dont want to carry food home....muchies from the rest will be good...I know I will bring at least 8qts of pollock/shrimp chowder myself...

Capt., got room for another old man?  Been a while since the Second Beach camper gathering in RI.  How are ya?  I didn't make last years but hope to get out there this year.  Sounds like fun.

Guys,
   I have that weekend off so I am in!  ;D  Right now I have my Tip-ups set for Lake Trout and Rainbows so if anyone could let me know what to set up for I'd appreciate it. I'd really like to go for some Pike but I've only ever caught one under the ice. (Poppa) drop me an email and we can make plans to carpool there.  I will bring some smoked venison, venison hot dogs and munchies.  I missed out last year but no way in heck this year!  I can't wait to hang out with everyone.

What there is to catch at Bartons cove:

Bass
Pickeral
Pike
Perch
Crappie
Sunfish(bluegill etc.)

Possible, but not likely
Walleye

Very Unlikely
Brown or RainbowTrout

It is on the Conn river, so anything is possible.  I'd set 3 for bass/perch/crappie, and 2 for Pike, but then again i like to catch an assortment.

Capt. Shay, I think you are the most experienced witht the Cove here, anything else i missed?

Hope this Bartons Cove is Big sounds like the Captain has something good going on.Looking forward to this one.About a 2hr drive from R.I. but sounds like it will be well worth the trip.

Yes, Wallys are taken there every year.  This is one of the beauties of fishing The River, you never know what is going to come out of the hole.  The Cove is primarily known for Large Mouth or pannies but within five miles upstream or down of the cove I have personally caught or seen caught:

Large Mouth Bass   Pickerel           Brown Trout
Small Mouth Bass   Northern Pike   Brook Trout
Striped Bass           Walleye           Rainbow Trout
Yellow Perch          Sturgeon           Cat fish
White Perch           Bow Fin            Burbot
Crappie                  Shad                Carp
Pumpkin seed        Mud Puppie      Salmon

About the only fish I have not seen is Lake trout (naturally), Tiger Trout or Horn pout and I wouldn't doubt that someone, somewhere has caught some of the later two.
