lots of people fall through every year, usually because they're out there too early or too late in the season...   never fish alone, bring spikes, PFD, etc....  everyone knows what and what not to do, yet people continue to fall through, sometimes with tragic, unnecessary consequences..

I don't understand why there are so many discussions regarding ice safety on this website (and elsewhere), yet people still do dumb stuff...

As long as we're talking about it, we're thinking about it. Can't prove a negative, but odds are this site has saved at least one. There is allways the anomaly on otherwise safe ice. There is/was a link to a site here on shanty somewhere that shows what to do. Worth seeing.

I was on the ice today and got off before shore ice went bad but somebody else waited too long and i ended up helping him get off with a ladder and some planks. I am amazed at how many experienced guys venture on the ice WITHOUT a chisel. I always take one with me at first and last ice.

What I'd like to know is WHY would you be out on a high current river on 3 inches of ice????  That's a death wish right there...you break through and go under, and you're gone.... ::) Doesn't sound like the smartest or safest idea....to me anyway.

i havn't fallen through yet.(35 years of it)
on first ice i'll carry spikes around my neck, wear a pfd, carry rope, etc. on 2-3" new black ice.
late in the season, i don't trust 18" of ice, so i stay off it.
in the last couple weeks, i've seen several threads on here about guys going through,late in the season.
i've learned to trust my instincts.
they told me to buy a boat and wait for open water.
grandpa told me-"never wrestle with a pig. you both get muddy and the pig likes it".

Not this year, but I did last year.  Luckily I was only in 3' or so of water...rapped the ice with my spud and everything gave way.  That was a cold ride home!!

I bought a float suit this year. I still do not take unnecessary chances but it does keep my bloodpressure lower!! It is very comfortable and warm. I do not know why everyone does not get one. A life is certainly worth more than $350.

Dropped the rear end of my snowmobile through the ice over this winter. Went off the main canal to the lake and was going to cut through the marsh like I've done before, but obviously the ice wasn't quite solid enough through the marsh. Just layed into the throttle and spun back around to shore. That is one nice thing about snowmobiles. As long as your skis don't go under, you can always throttle across open water.

That's one of the reason I don't like a ten inch auger hole. Because if it is a hole big enough for my foot to fit through, sooner or later it'll happen!

Ifell through the ice trying to get on a week into our spring angling season.     Solution: Go home and change. Bring back a long 2 by 10 plank.  Works great. {lol}

Yep, And pretty soon you'll be carrying along an inner tube! Ain't preaching. I'm old enough to know better but don't. Consider a float vest and ice picks when you know d**d well you shouldn't chance it. Saved my sorry a** once!

 Put one leg through about up to my knee. Right on shore coming off the ice.  :o  Last trip of the season too. Good way to end it. >:(
