Snowmachine rescue.
« on: Feb 27, 2007, 01:32 PM »
I'm going up to Stuart lake on Friday to rescue a snowmachine that went down in 24 ft of water in December. The rider was OK. Plan is to drop my aqua-vu down the hole to locate machine. They put a 2X4 in the hole beside where it went down. So we know the area where it went under. It is also pretty heavy so probably went straight down. Once located we will attach meat hooks to front of skis and then build a tripod with pulley on and hoist her up. Should be not too heavy until it comes out of water. If I have no luck on Friday am, then a diver is coming up in afternoon to help. Any pre advice anyone can give me that might of had some experience in this type of mission before?

TGF,  Been thinking about how you're going to get the hooks on the sled from a hole in the ice-  might want to cut a long pecker pole to use as a tool to hook the hook up. or even better bring some 10' lengths of 1/2 or 3/4 emt conduit and some couplings to make a long pike pole to help get things hooked up-  do you get what I'm saying?   ??? ;D

Already though of that bud and they have cut a 27 ft pecker pole. Plan on using elastic to hold hook on end of pole, then when its on, just pull hard and the elastics will pop off pole and hook. The rope will be attached to the hooks.
It will all be going down tomorrow am. I will post some pics when we get back.

This is the great white north and we help each other out. I won't be charging anything. The fellow I'm helping get it out is a really nice guy. Him and his brothers helped me with my sons moose. They had a bigger boat and just came up next to it in the water and hoisted it onto their boat. Then we took it to their Island and gutted and quartered it and they helped load it onto my boat. The type of guy that you could call at 4 am and he would be there in a few minutes to help you out. Then laugh about it the next day. The diver as well is free.
I will take some pics for all to laugh over. ;D

Oh everything will be OK and if it isn't I will still be going to catch some hopefully 40 inch plus lakers. Hope to get some great hog shots. Going to the lake I tried to get into last year but got sweated up and ran out of daylight trying to get there. If the crust holds on the 6 feet of snow and it doesn't get too warm...we will be snowmachining in :-\. The pulling up of my buddies snowmachine is just an added bonus to the adventure. After all life is so full of adventures heh, and we get the pleasure of living them ;D

A fish finder might find it but my Aqua-Vu worked better when hooking up the hook onto the ski.
Here is pic of it sitting upright nicely on bottom of Stuart lake in 24ft of water.

After the machine is located on my Aqua-vu, we start drilling a big hole to get it out.

Notice the ice is thick enough for a few more weeks for sure ;D After the hole is done I put the camera back down and we use a meat hook to attach it to the front ski. Fish-slayer is holding the rope and we attach it to the ATV and winch it up.

Everyone crowds around the hole to see the red thing coming up...

Here is Roy the semi-proud owner of his reclaimed machine ;D

We take it back to his sons shop and after some tinkering for a few hours, it is running.[/img]

Oh yeah we were not alone out there. Some sleddders were practicing for some preliminarys for the Ididarod

Pretty easy in fact I lifted the rope attached to the ski by myself and was surprised how fairly light it was on dead lift in water. However I couldn't hand over hand it....that was just a straight lift. Much heavier when out of water though. Didn't take long once rope was on the ski to get her up.

Great story and pics, Terry!  Good thing your friend marked it so well in December.  Made it easier to locate the machine for sure.
