Catching Shiners
« on: Feb 19, 2007, 01:23 AM »
Can anyone help me!   I have tried catching shiners in small pond with minnow traps and dog food for bait. I think I use too much dog food. I soak the traps for 5-7 hours with no fish when I bring them up >:( Ireally need to catch bait because it is up to 8.50 a dozen getting real expensive.

PLEASE ANY HELP THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!

I started trapping at thanksgiving but it slowed down around ice in so I stopped, (around northern Rhode Island)I used 3 rubber coated cage traps( Walmart.9$).I ended up with 125 med/large shiners,Tried trappin through the ice last yr but didn't have any luck. I use stale white bread, dry dog/cat food...I think they can see the white bread better.
How are the edges ?

ive used bread in traps with a lot of success... sometimes ill just use a bright white rock and place it in and seem to catch a lot (guessin its because of the color)
'Its either me or ice fishing' she says... i still have my jiffy

A trick I learned a while ago...bait with bread as usual...then take an onion and cut it up into small pieces and add to your trap.  I don't know why it works but it more than doubled my catch when I started using it.  Let me know if it worked for you too.
Thanks, Dad, for taking the time to show me how to fish!!

I use pizza dough in one of my wife's nylon stockings hanging from my trap like a lobster bait bag. It works great and the fish can't eat all of the bait right away because of the nylons I also use sour dough and it works great too.
If fishing was work I'd never be sick!
