Everybody on all sides of this issue agrees that there are populations of these minnows in some of our waters. In some cases more than a few of them.

Here is a few potential scenarios if this LD passes... add your own

A guy traps a few dozen shiners in a lake or pond that contains one of these 4 baitfish. Heads out on the very same body of water he caught the bait to do some ice fishing later that day. If one of those shiners that he has in the pail is an Emerald or one of the other 3 he will be guilty of violating this law. He is now the posterboy for the anti invasive campain. What if you have a bath tub full of 300 and one is an Emerald? You that good at telling them apart? My point is that if some are still going to be using Emeralds as much as they are trying not to why make a criminal out of them?

This bill is a sledgehammer where a finish nail is needed. I'm for our trout and fisheries as much as the next guy. I love to fish. It seems that you can't disagree with some people without getting attacked and labled as being against everything. I think it is perfectly possible that you can be against this bill and for trout conservation.

I appreciate everybody that used the form, I think it can send an important message from the MIAA that we are a new and growing voice to be heard. I think folks might be using the link and not posting because they don't want the crap that comes your way when you disagree with the most radical among us that is ok too.

If it ends up that ten or fifteen guys speak up and thats it, it is still 15 more than spoke up last time. That my friends is a start.

I guess when we put the sledgehammer down we can talk about that. What's important is that we not make criminals out of regular fisherman. Seems the civil thing to do.

Is someone from the MIAA going to speak at next Tuesday's hearing?
I hope there is a good representation from the icefishing community.

people are definately stepping up.... ;)  Excellent response so far from the guys here, from what I've read and heard...but more would definately be better....hint hint... ;D

I believe Mr. Whalen, who heads the Maine Bait Dealers Association, as well as being one of the top dogs of MIAA will be there.

i think that this is the most important thing...like you said earlier if someone catches bait and fishes the same pond with that bait and gets caught using an "illegal" fish then they get screwed. that has to be the worst situation one could imagine.

I'll tell you what you have to do and it's the same as the Salmon farmers on the coast, you destroy the whole lot. The terrorist made the farmers destroy all thier fish because they weren't pure native fish. We lost a business on the coast that employed a lot of people. Now these same terrorist are trying to kill all the rest of commercial fishing from lobster to hake because of poor data and a gutless government.

recently found out that in conjunction with the LD 163 meeting, there will also be a discussion on LD 252, which is an act to allow the IF&W to authorize licenced fisherman to help in the eradication of invasives.

So - based on the wording of this letter, the MIAA is objecting to this bill based on the question of whether these species are native to Maine or not?  Is that really the point?  Five years ago, IF&W Biologists estimated that over well over 500 introductions have been made to Maine waters just since 1980.  With so many fish having been moved around, it is virtually impossible to to prove what is native and what has been introduced.  So if this were the point of the bill, I agree that it would (and should) be dead in it's tracks.  But the real question, which isn't addressed in this form letter, is whether these species are more of a threat due to their tendancy to become invasive when introduced to new waters.  I haven't seen anyone address this issue.  Somebody, somewhere, who knows more about this than I do, selected these four species as a particular problem.  And if removing them from the 'OK for bait' list provides some protection for our natural fish assemblages, than I can't oppose this bill.  Blindly opposing it based simply on whether they are native or not seems a little short sighted to me.  Just another opinion -
