Snow storm and the ice!
« on: Feb 13, 2007, 10:36 AM »
Well... It seems as if a heavy snowfall is on the way.  It is a good thing is is nice and cold right now before it hits, maybe that will thicken it up just a little more so there isn't going to be slush in some areas.  Probably need the snow shoes.  What does anyone think?

Snow will push down on the ice causing water to come up through holes, cracks, and the shore line. After a while it will balance out, and the slush that is created will freeze to form white ice.

Hopefully there will be some wind to blow the snow off. That should make things a little bit better.

30 mile per hour winds in Syracuse, gusting to 40 should help!

Not likely. There's a lot of moisture in a storm like this, and it'll probably be a heavier wetter snow than what we've been seeing. It won't blow off as easily, and may cause some slush problems with the amount of weight it puts on the ice. Be prepared for some hefty shoveling in the driveway and nasty travel on the ice.

Park those 4 wheelers. This one may make it tough for the snowmobiles also, forget about walking. I remember a day that I fished in a heavy snowstorm. Dragged my 2 man clam 1/2 a mile on bare ice in the AM. It started to snow like crazy and the bluegills were going crazy too. When I decided to quit there was about 8" of snow on the ice and I had a bucket full of Gills. Never thought I'd make it back to the parking lot. That was when I was in good shape. Today, I would have to leave the Clam there if I still had it. This has been a bummer for us icers.

No worries here. I know enough now to leave all excess weight home (shanty) when there's snow on the ice. The storm will shut the fish down for 2-3 days. Saturday will be a good productive day .
