HELP I'M FREAK'IN OUT
« on: Feb 06, 2007, 09:17 AM »
A little off topic but has to do with ICE and FISHING!
I  winterized my boat about 3 wks ago. I always put rv antifreeze in the live well and run it thru the pumps. I bought 3 gallons and only used 2. I set the other gallon on the deck of my jon boat and forgot about it. I just walked by it and decided to put it in the garage.
IT'S FROZE SOLID!!!!!!!!! Sides are bulg'in and all! Says good to -50. I think not!!
Is this normal?? I've never had a problem in the spring but i've never looked in the winter. Been doing it the same way for years. Only -5 last night
Did i mention I'm Freak'in out!

Straight anti - freeze will freeze. If you read the back of the container they usually have a freeze point for each ratio of water to anti-freeze. Unless it's pre-mixed you have to mix it with water.

might have something to do with the thin wall of the container it's in versus the wall thickness of the hoses and metal casing of the engine???  just a thought

We bought some of that same stuff (I'll bet) to put in our club's toilets when the heat is off at the clubhouse.   Same thing happened.  Luckily it didn't crack the toilets though.

My brother in-law a few years back used some "environmentally friendly" anti-freeze on 3 boats and all 3 I/O blocks cracked. He followed the directions and still had problems, the company actually made good on all 3 engines. Maybe you had a bad batch????

You will be fine. -50 is the rating for when you will take damage. All antifreeze slushes at a certain temp (should be on the label). Your container is closed and doesn't allow for expansion. your hoses and engine do allow for expansion.

Antifreeze prevents ice crystals from forming properly in other liquids such as water.  It will freeze on it's own at a much higher temp so the mixture is critical.

Pasted from some website.

What's more, straight antifreeze will not provide as much freezing protection as a mixture of antifreeze and water. Straight antifreeze freezes at -8 degrees F!

Okay after a little tech suport i'm feeling better. Their advise,  break the seal. I did and before my eyes it sorta liqidated. some thing about isotopes and pressure.  just not a good feeling to see premixxed antifreeze  froze solid!Thank you all for responding as it got me looking in the right direction.

Life is back to good!! Nothing like a little crisis to get ya going in the morning!

Crisis is when your wife refuses to bring you and your buddies the reserve Molson 18 pack out on the ice at 10:30 am.

*note:  Mrs. Roacho pulled that this weekend with an "Absolutly Not!"

Pay the extra two bucks and get a brand name. They have a rep because they work.
