Fished a lake up near Lake Wallenpaupack yesterday from 6:30 am - 12:30 pm.  Caught a mix of bluegills, perch, and a 19" smallmouth ( nice fight on a 24" UL St. Croix ) all jigging. I brought home 8 Gills (all 8"-10") and 8 Perch (10"-14') and released the smallmouth. This was by far the best trip this year for me. I caught many other panfish that didn't make the grade and were released....

Maybe I just need to rub my jigging spoons against my kielbasa before dropping it down the hole from now on?  ::)  :D

I'm new here, and new to ice fishing. My son and I were out on Monday, to a small private pond in the Poconos and managed 20 gills, all jigging.

Private water still means they have to follow the PA regs unless its a private farm pond I believe. If I'm not mistaken bass only have to be 12" though unless taken from lakes/ river with big bass regs. I could be wrong though since I could care less about targeting them  ::) ::)

Hey Dizzy, I've got about 10 inches of ice up this way, tough going with a hand auger, but I manage. Both lakes I've been to have had one heck of a gill bite

Fished Lake "F" this afternoon from 12 to 3 pm- managed 3 picks, 1 largemouth 14", and 5 perch--on a combination of tip ups, tip downs and jigging.  Was first time fishing at Lake "F".

Fished Lake “G” with JMiser and a “lurker” known as Gnuster yesterday afternoon… following a steep descent (which I knew wouldn’t be nearly as fun going back UP later on) we were cutting holes around 1:30pm. Almost immediately Gnuster started steadily pulling fish through the ice… not long after that JMiser had his spread of tip-ups out and started chasing flags within minutes… meanwhile I sat there jigging away, moving and jigging some more, changing lures and jigging some more, accusing my spikes of not trying, etc. Long-story-short, I did NOT have one of my better moments on the ice… anytime you LOSE more fish than you land, you just know that its one of those days when the bear eats you. Without getting into details, let’s just say that between the THREE of us we probably landed between 70-80 fish, and my contribution to the final score was about equal to the guy in Cleveland that spells LeBron James.  :D

All kidding aside, a nice mix of bass, pickerel, bluegills, yellow perch, and a “bonus” SUCKER were landed yesterday and some of the perch were true JUMBOS. We stuck around until it was nearly dark hoping to score some crappie and blitzing every open hole we had, but they just wouldn’t show. I forgot to bring a lantern along so we couldn’t work the night shift for them.

Most of the main basin where we fished was 5-7 feet deep and carpeted with dead (or dying) milfoil. Ice was about 8-9 inches and a bit sloppy on top in yesterday’s balmy winter weather.

By the way… JMiser you were right on the money about that climb out of there last night… I thought Gnuster was going to have to run for the defibrillator at some point!  :o

Dizzy, sounds like you needed a crappie specialist along, LOL! You've got to listen to the wind, let the game come to you, yada, yada, yada. Some days are just like that; I've lost a few real nice fish lately for no particular reason, just lights more of a fire under me.  Next time you have a great day you'll appreciate it more.

that's the truth Cpatian, right out of the reg book

Diz, awesome day yesterday, and I'm glad you got that filthy lurker to turn true.  Now he can add his  "few nice gills, couple dink perch" report from any public water he goes to.  And with that, he gets the open invitation to Monroe Anytime.

Diz, you do realize we still have to get your prowess working on emerald lakes.  The hard part is just picking which of the 8 lakes to fish.

Never seen a grown kid so enthused over not even the best lake in my arsenol.  Then again, the jokes coming out of his mouth comparing what he was catching to some other lakes was priceless.  And he laughed and giggled way to much to be right.  Oh well, made another icefisher realize its a good thing to hang out in bars and make freinds.  80 fish in 4 hours has that effect.

And you saw what I meant no numbers in Gruber lake, just size.  Those fish were disgusting footballs.

Good report by the way, would have love to have seen some of those fish you lost.

Anyway, another day tomorrow, another lake to hit up.  Polish buddy wants to hit up Emerald, I want to hit up Skytop, I'll leave it in the wifes hands and we'll see what kind of surprise I get tomorrow.

You guys enjoy.

JM,, I think your pictures are great. You always show nice back ground shots of the sky, or forest, along with the fishing pictures. The one I like best is of the island with the trees ice covered. The ones of yous guys cooking kielbosi over the kerosene burner while using vodka as anti-freeze are good. And the ones of your wife handling slimy fish in crappy weather, after getting a hundred dollar manicure, facial, and shopping spree at Elaines in Manhattan... GREAT JOB, you lucky dog you!!!

I ice fished the gun club pond at the gun club I am a member of from 7 am until almost 11 am.  Started in the deep corner but I couldn't believe the ice wasn't thicker.  I only went about 25 feet off the bank because the ice was only 3 1/2 inches at most.  It got thinner the further out I went.  I had 3 tip ups out with Power Bait and used one jigging rod.  After about 45 minutes one of my tip ups went off and it was running fast.  I set the hook and felt a very heavy fish.  Got it about half way in when my 10 lb leader broke!  That had to be one big trout.  I had one other flag and it dropped it.  I caught one 17 inch brook trout jigging and had 4 others on the jigging rod that got off.

Around 10 am, I went up to the shallow end where there is one deep pocket right along the bank.  Drilled 2 holes and the ice was barely 2 1/2 to 3 inches thick!  But as soon as I dropped my jig down the hole, I saw a big brook trout eat it and that was my big fish of the day at just about 18 inches but so super fat.  I missed 3 other big brook trout there and then called it a day.

So I kept 2 trout.  When I cleaned the brook trout that was the biggest, I quickly found out why it was so fat.  In it's stomach was a 7 inch Senko, part of a plastic worm and a 5 inch plastic crawfish lure.  So I bet that trout was there a while, over the last part of summer, to eat those plastics that folks used for bass.

This pond is stocked periodically throughout the cold water months with some really nice trout.  I'm betting the one with the plastics in it was stocked this spring.

Here's the 2 I kept today -

This is what was in the fat one's stomach -

I'm coming to Lake Naomi with the family over the President's week and am hoping to get out on the ice while we are renting a place and the family heads to the slopes.  Can anyone tell me anything about Lake Naomi through the ice?  Condition of ice? species? hidden regs a visitor from NY must worry about? Worthwhile areas to work in a brief stay? Thanks in advance.

Haven't had access to Naomi in a lot of years but did fish there a lot in the 70's & early 80's. We always had luck in just about the middle of the lake out from the club house. Fourteen & fifteen inch perch were common & some monster bass. Good luck!

Thanks Gillaholic.  I fished there in the summer months before with relatives who own in Lake Naomi and managed some of those bass around the large island but that area is somewhat shallow.  I was thinking of heading down to the dock area(opposite of the pool area?).  I believe there is some deep water, leading to the release creek.

I've been on the ice quite a bit the past two weekends, both 12hr. days on the past 2 sun and Mon, and then hit it again from 11am to 5pm yesterday, got soaked by the rain.

I'm fish'n a private pond in the Clarks Summit area. I got permission from a land owner and the only request is to put back the bass and walleye as the cottagers association is stocking them and tryin' to build the population.

Well, I kinda' dialed in the walleye here by accident as I'm targeting panfish, and the walleye in the first image was 18" and hit right as the sun hit the horizon, late in the day, last Sun. ironically in pretty shallow at 10fow. The second was 20" that I hit yesterday around 2pm, in the same depth. Both fell to fat heads 15" off the bottom on tip-ups set to target the perch.

Here's some other images. The perch are attacking in 20fow-15fow.

Yesterdays dinner...

Nice pics, and fish too, for that matter. The second walleye pic is really nice. Hard to feel bad about releasing them when you have a nice bunch of perch on the ice. Guess I'm not the only one with bells on my flags.

Thanks Van!!!

Yeah, I won't fish tip-ups without bells any more. I've been using them for about 2 years now. Before the bells I would set up to jig so the wind would be at my back and I could watch the traps. Then many times, the wind would change, or the better structure would be limited cause I'd wouldn't turn my back to the trap string. I can't tell you how many times before the bells I'd look up to see a flag and wonder how long it's been up, only to find 20yds of line run off and a bare hook. I focus like a pointer on a pheasant when jigging, so the bells snap me out of my locked in condition.

As for the "eyes", yeah there is a sweet sorrow to the parting, but I do get a great feeling when I put the fishes' head back in the water and it swims through the hole with a burst of life. The second walleye is 20" and the first 18".

There are huge crappie in that lake too, reported to 16". I can't find the buggers though, and have really been covering some lake area. Something tells me that when I find 'em though it will be like hittin' the mother load.

Tightlines Van!!!

I couldn't stand the slow action on the usual lakes anymore so I hit a local farm pond this afternoon from 2-5pm. I was able to jig up 30 gills and 6 largemouth. Kept 20 gills and 2 bass for tomorrow's supper. From 4-5 I couldn't believe the action. Bang, bang, bang and I was lovin it! about time for some good action this year. Tomorrow I might try Pinchot.

I got out Sunday and Monday to the private lake.

I hit this beast on a tip-up and fathead in 6fow 10yards off the bank in a boulder field. The crazy thing is I was leadered up with 18# floro but to a #12 red gami octapus. It amazed me how tight that hook locked up in the top of the fishes' mouth. I sent her back to make babies after her photo op. Both perch are the same fish.

Then I hit this perch and thought I had something bigger, but it brought a stick out of the hole with it. Guess I found structure.

Last, I saw a few people singing the praises of the buckshot spoons, on here, for walleye. The bass like 'em too.

Now the rumor has it that there are a few monster pike in the lake. So with the walleye score and the slob bass score, coupled with the rumor, I went to Gander's spoon section and picked up a few profiles to jig off my abassaduer 6500{mid 70's vintage} and heavier jigging rod. I'm head'n back out after work tonight to look for monsters.

FWIW, my best fish this season have come in water 12' or less.

Tightlines and enjoy the ice while it lasts!!!
