IF YOU COULD ONLY ICE-FISH ONE WAY...
« on: Feb 05, 2007, 05:34 AM »
If you could only ice-fish one way, that is method, jigging, tip-ups etc; and use only one bait, artificial, live-bait or combination of both, what would it be? Remember, only one way, one bait.

Jig - live bait.

Lets me use anything from panfish size with spikes up to pike size with minnows.

This is an easy one for me.  I would choose a #12 fatboy glow/green color tipped with 3 spikes. 1 natural and 2 reds.  I thorne panfish sweetheart, a daiwa underspin reel and 2# mono. There aren't many panfish that swim that won't at least give this presentation a look.  If I had my choice, I would be using it to target a school of bluegills and crappies suspend 5 feet of the bottom in about 20 feet of water.

Got to be jigging. Either similar to Permo or change over to rapalas & spoons for the larger gamefish. Need to stay active. Maybe I'm have a case of A.D.D. because when I fish for bass, walleye, pike I cast and retrieve. Trolling never interested me

I have often wondered about this question and found it hard to decide. I think that the state you fish in or local regulations would help determine which way. If you are allowed two or three lines per person, than the tip-up would allow you to fish two or three holes at one time.  As far as success, I also like jigging alot, but then again you would be limited to one hole. If the fish were active all the time, this would be OK. As far as liking one method over another, I cannot really say because I enjoy them both. I'm seeing here that the tip-up may be getting the nod and maybe that is because of covering more ground at one time and getting a fix on where their active. You could then move other tip-ups to that contour or whatever. I would have to lean on tip-ups & live bait right now, but for those reasons. Those who are only allowed one line could probably enlighten us all, and make us thankful for our available choices.THX for your input.

I love to jig for panfish.  If I could only choose one bait it would be Ratso's.  Now, since others can tip their jigs with bait, if in a pinch I'd tip this with a spike or two...  My preference is no bait because if the fish are on I can get my fish down and get another hit in the time it takes to replace a spike.

I prefer to catch, fight and land fish with a ice rod and reel.  However, we can use 6 lines up here (with up to 6 hooks per line, although I don't mess with risking that potentially spectacular snarl) so we usually have 5 tipups out each and that leaves 1 line to jig/deadstick with.

We like to camp in the trailer next to the shore where we can see our tipups/shanty/etc.  When we head in for the night we put out another tipup each to replace the rod/reel.  In the morning, when we head back out, we bring in 1 tipup and go back to the rod/reel.

That's how I like to fish.

Boy that would be very tough for me to do. :-\
I like to always keep experimenting with colors, baits, sizes and attractors.
It would all depend on the fish species, but, I would have to go with a small frozen minnow on a small whistler jig. ;)

Thanks to those who answered the question. After 25 replies, it looks like twelve anglers  would be jiggin, if they could only fish one method. There would be ten fishing tip-ups. One could not make the decision, one would jury rig, and one would use their bare hands if they had too. ;D Live bait would win out. I would have thought that tip-ups would have been the majority, however this thread shows different. Good info. Thanks again for contributing.  IR
