fish smell on hands after filleting.... Any tricks?
« on: Jan 31, 2007, 05:52 PM »
After cleaning a few pike, your hands stink just about as bad as anything, and it seems to be everlasting in your skin!
Ive read in NAFC Magazine that you can use laundry soap, and ive read in cook books to use mouthwash, but so far laundry soap works the best.
- Do you have any tips for getting the stink off?

Toothpaste...go figure.  My father-in-law is the one that told me about this little trick.  You wash in toothpaste then in laundry soap and I bet you'll smell real pretty.  I thought he was just trying to get me to get toothpaste all over, but it really worked.

If you have an air purifier that puts ozone into the air, rub your hands in front of it for a minute or two and the odor will be gone.

I use dish soap with a little table salt. Heard about it from a TV segment. Works pretty good.

I guess I never really cared about the pike smell too bad.  I filleted a lot of pike up at school last year, but I probably just never noticed the smell, considering that my room always smelled like fish anyway from all my gear and clothes.  :D

If you have a stainless sink rub your hands in the bowl of the sink.  It really works.

Anything stainless will work well. I have seen stainless steel lumps intended for this purpose. If all else fails, soak your hands with diesel fuel. ;D

I'd rather have the smell of the fish then diesel fuel. I have a diesel pickup and one drop goes a long way.

Its called a wonder bar. its listed in cabelas under fishing section/ miscellaneous tools.
7.99 per bar. 5  revews said it worked great and 3 said in a piont "worthless".
I'll let you know after mine arrives. Probably a body chemistry thing. Besides, 10 bucks, i waste more than that on dumber things....(buzz sticks)

They just did a test of those on a local TV station and they got less than rave reviews. Didn't remove onion or garlic from the tester's hands.

I have one of those stainless bar things hanging over the kitchen sink...sometimes it works...sometimes it doesn't...
I wonder if it depends on how many beers I had while cleaning the fish ???
