First fish speared
« on: Jan 30, 2007, 08:03 PM »
Yesterday i went out ice fishing with a few buddies. we got there and within 5 minutes my friend had speared a walleye, i was really excited because i have never speared a fish and it was my turn to spear. a small walleye comes in and i gently set my spear in the water and throw. none of us can tell if i hit the fish or not. the silt clears and theres the beauty wiggling around on my spear. i was very excited and now i cant wait to go out again.

This is cut right out of the state regs for montana........

Ice Fishing
Lakes and Reservoirs
2 lines with 2 hooks per line through the ice on lakes, reservoirs, or ponds open to fishing. When a line is used through the ice, the angler need not be in immediate control, but must be in the vicinity and in visual contact with the line.
Size of Hole
In waters not open to spearing, the maximum size hole that may be used for ice fishing is 144 square inches or 12 inches in diameter.
There is no size limit for a hole used for fishing with a spear.

I did not look any further for which bodies of water were permitted, but this is enough to cut the guy some slack. It IS legal in his state.

Spearing is legal in a lot of places.  I think it was the walleye part they were asking about.
Give a man a fish, and he can eat for a day.  But teach a man how to fish, and he'll be dead of mercury poisoning inside of three years.

Just wanted to say how cool of you to practise such a Old tradtion from the States next you will be carving decoys keep up the good work but try to only spear fish in place your allowed or the DNR WILL fry you up for breakfast like a fresh walleye fillet.  ;D sure would like to see some of your ice decoys

Here i took this right out of the spearing section of the montana fishing regulations.

In all waters open to fishing, nongame fish, northern pike, burbot (ling), walleye and whitefish may be taken with rubber or spring-propelled spears by persons swimming or submerged. Spears may be used through the ice for nongame fish, northern pike, walleye, sauger and burbot (ling).

so yes it is legal to spear walleye.

I can't beleive that walleye and northern pike are considered non game fish in Montana.  That is different.  But I guess Montana is a long way from Manitoba and other species are likely more prevalent.

Congrats on your first speared fish.

Congrats on spearing your first fish.  It's good to see a fellow spearsman here in MT.  If it wasn't for spearing I never would have gotten into ice fishing.  Where were you spearing at?

I have never speared there, but I sure want to, quite a drive from Billings.  I ussually go to South Sandstone near Plevna, as I have family im Miles City that I stay with.  I heard they have some real nice perch in Nelson, is that true?

ya if you find the right spot you can catch 20+ good size ones in a day, as a matter of fact my friend just caught a 20 oz. one the other day.

well first you drill a good sized a hole in the ice, then you get a darkhouse and set it over the hole. next you get a decoy, i like to use a 10" pike decoy. then you swim it around in the water, this attracts a fish in. as soon as a fish comes in you gently set you spear in the water, aim at the fish and throw.

What'd he use - some sort of weird little rig with barbed safety pins or something for the smelt  :D

Can't say I've ever heard of that one!

Welcome aboard. Good to have some more members from the west side of the states show up. Sorry to see that they jumped on you right off the bat without knowing any of your state regs firsthand. Keep up the reports of your spearing though.
I've got a buddy that gave up fishing Oahe and drives to Ft. Peck every other weekend in the summer. He's asked me to go in the past but never took him up on it. Always wanted to though. Sounds like they catch some fantastic Walleys up there.
Waterbeater out!<br />
