« on: Jan 26, 2007, 10:50 AM »
I'm considering buying some.

You like them?

What kind and how much do they run?

Thanks. ;D

Yaktrax. The best all around in my opinion. I think they were about 14 bucks but don't remember for sure  ;)

i use mine year round on ice and in the streams

no matter how good your health insurance is, if you fall and get hurt its going to cost you more than the price of a nice pair of cleats

billybono hit it right on the head!!   I always used the rubber slipon with the cleats only on the front--last year the ice was like glass with no snow on it, I went to get one of my tipdowns and put my weight on my heel and landed square on my back (lucky kept my head up) white hot pain shot the whole length of my body---I didn't dare to move anything but my hands and arms for at least 5 mins or more (my buddy wanted to help me and I said no)   I didn't know if I would be able to move my legs and I had to get enough nerve up to find out. lucky everthing was ok.  Now I have a good pair of cleats that have spikes on the on the whole bottom.  I've seens 3 other people fall and was carried off the ice. it only takes one time

I just have a pair of the cheap rubber HT or SouthBend or what ever from walmart.. not the crap with the springs. just good old rubber and metal teeth :)

The most important things to remember about cleats:  They only work if you bring them with ya ;)

I have both Stabilicers, a Maine Co. ( http://www.32north.com/ ) and yak-trax (http://www.yaktrax.com/). Stabilicers are more $$, yaks are 10-15 bucks. both have pros and cons, yaks are more convenient, Stabilicers have replaceable studs.  good luck :)

I have Stabilicers, they are very dependable, and like KJB said, they have replaceable studs. They are rather expensive, but I think they'll last a good, long time. 8)

I don't use cleats any more. The boot chains from Cabelas are much better (for me!).

ive tried the cheap ones from ht i think, just studs in the front, but they kept tearing on me when i would put them on over my big boots, so i bought some from southbend, still fairly cheap but seem nicer, they have the yellow studs in the front and the coils in the back.

I've used the ice cleats and they grip well but I can't wear them inside my Clam 5600 as they will tear up the floor.  I did have a problem with them slipping off the ball of the boot and coming loose.  I've been using the Yaktrax Pros and like them alot.  Can wear them in and out of the shanty without the hassle of taking them off and putting them on.  When I first got them, (around $25 from Cabelas), I had concerns about their durability.  However, they have  held up well over some intensive use.

Only problem with them is the coils underfoot have a tendency to "pack up" with fresh snow on glare ice.  Can be a problem (I have slipped and nearly fallen), especially when dragging gear.  However, in SE Montana, that is a rare situation.  Normally, fresh snow here will either blow off or consolidate with the ice by thawing and freezing.

My .02s.

Tight lines.

I have Icer's that I bought from Lee Valley - http://www.leevalley.com/garden/page.aspx?c=1&p=40911&cat=2,51676

They can be a bit finicky to get onto your boot, but once you have it figured out, they're great.  A bit pricey, and perhaps a bit heavy, but for as much as I actually use them, I'd rather have something that I know works (got a testimonial from another MB forum member) than something I'm not sure about.  This winter is the first time I've seen Yaktrax around here.

I purchased the HT cheapos.  Don't like them as they keep coming off as they aren't really designed to fit my size (14) and are a real pain to stretch far enough so when putting them on.

Those ice spiders looks nice...may have to look further into those.

One thing you might want to concern yourself with is how you put them on.  Ones like the HTs are rubber and you put in the toe and then pull it over the heel.   For some this can be a real pain especially if you have arthritis and may need to look at strap on types.
