For ice fishing, you need a case of some kind to mount the head unit to and hold the battery.  I cannot see how one would effectively operate the unit without one.  I run Vexilar's "ULTRA PACK CARRYING CASE" with my FL-18.  Their "GENZ BLUE BOX CARRYING CASE" is a popular one you have likely come across.  Any Vexilar ice-fishing package you buy from a retail store will come with a carrying case (in addtion to the head unit, transducer, and battery).

If by "carrying case" you are referring to one of the soft packs or some kind of bag for it, I have never run one.  If I tow my gear out, I put my Ultra Pack in a tote.  I could see a soft pack or bag being useful to keep it clean if you tow it out in the open.

These soft packs are good and easy on the wallet when you can find them ..they becaome easy to find once the season is in full swing . Having a soft case is nice as it keeps/stores my Vexilar  Glo ring ,transducer arm and rod holders .

It’s nice to keep the snow out if you are out in the elements. I added some accessories to my Genz box that I couldn’t use with the case so I no longer use it. Don’t really miss it either. If you just want some extra protection there is a cover for just the screen of an FLX for about $10

Scheels has free shipping days from time to time or free ship after $75 ...this is a tad oversized bag

My original Vexilar cover was very tight on my case ...went with the Trophy Angler...lot more room and has served me well for 5 plus seasons or more

Trophy Angler has more than one case these days.  I think the one you'd want for a Vex is the traditional square bottom case if it's on the blue Genz Box base.
I'm a man, but I can change, If I have to, I guess.

I dont believe so ...Trophy Angler makes a square bag for the Genz box ...they seem to be out of stock every where...except Ebay maybe. Trophy Angler really doesn't sell off their site for the most part. Keep checking Scheels ...Reeds...Marine General ...Joes sporting goods ...Glens army navy ..Franks great outdoors ...Amazon Sportsman Guide

Scheels use to carry them in the past ...from my recollection Trophy Angler is one of the last manufacturers to get stuff out to retailers

I guess this depends on how you look at it. Do you need to buy the Vexilar soft cover? Absolutely not. Should you cover it with something? Yes. I always figured this was a big draw to the pro pack is you just set it in a bucket with other gear. I like the Genz pack, and I set mine in a soft side lunchbox cooler bag when I move. Without it you are going to get a bunch of ice and snow on it. The Genz pack itself is plenty durable to handle it, you just need to keep the head unit semi-clean. I mostly walk out until its safe to drive out. Back when I had a snowmobile it was really important, because all your stuff gets blasted with the rooster tail of snow. A cover over the entire sled is a good idea at that point, and then maybe you wouldn't need a cover only for the Vexilar.

Both the ultra pack and pro pack fit in a 5 gallon bucket. If you have a lid for the bucket your vex stays dry when traveling.  The benefit of the soft cover or similar cases is that it stays mostly dry if your fishing when its snowing and your not in a shelter and keeps dust and debris out during storage. The soft pack is cheaply made and does not last. The clam case is great but doesn't fit my flx28 ultra pack however it works well for my homemade shuttle for the helix 7

May or may not help but for my Helix 7 with ice caddy I used a ski boot bag. plenty of room, bit bulky but at least it is covered in the sled. Can fit some round Frabill tip ups on the side pockets too, or tackle boxes. Lots of sizes and options on Amazon.

I'm with you all the way on the five gallon buckets.
I use the Gamma Seal screw on lids for mine.
It works great to protect it from damage on my snowmobile 'cause the buckets pretty tough.
Underneath my Vex, I carry Some small jig boxes and the coiled hose or my heater to connect to a larger tank or whatever I might need that fits in there.
It's waterproof and very durable and doubles as a seat should the need a rise.
