Checklist - Are You Ready???
« on: Nov 26, 2006, 08:19 PM »
Alright guys,
I know were still in hunting season, but are you ready for the ice yet.
I got my first orders all in, and respooled all thats needed, sharpened hooks, shanty's ready - Auger too. tip ups are good, new jigging rods, and some fresh hali's -frostees-pimples-rapalas ect, ect...

Put an edge on the hand spikes and put the 30' rope back with the ice gear.
What are some good safety tips you use on the ice that might be different from the shelve supply at the local tackle shop???

Think Ice,
Wellsy

I highly recommend and encourage for everyone esp in a perm shack to add a carbon monoxide detector, smoke detector and a fire extinguisher. Add that as basic safety gear on the ice!  Propane unvented produces alot of carbon monoxide!  Just think a headache in the shack may not be from the adult beverages

Thats the truth about carbon monoxide, many an outdoorsman have fallen due to poor ventilation.
Most modern shanty's are built with vents, but it is something you should always be aware of.

Maybe just wishing, but if you check the extended forecast for the north country we could be in for a good cold snap heading into this weekend :woot:
let's just hope when the temp gets low it stays there.

I think all of my gear has been ready since August or so. I do believe my wife is or did put a nice fat order into fish307.com for Christmas though!
Somethings that Santa could be brining this year!

AquaVue
Auger Blades
Jig Rod Combos , light and medium actions
jig rod case
tackle box
Assortment of small jigs, halis, pimples etc

I have some minnows in the tank trapped from the creek by the Swamp Camp.

Have a new hardside shack for Lake Tanglefoot.

Ok so where is the ice already!

I did some organizing last night. Got some new 4lb line and a new storage box for jigs and tackle. Fixed a rod tip and spooled the new rod I got for my b'day. I'll be ready when the ice gets here.

I am ready.  Over the summer I bought a Vex, pup-up shanty and a heater.  Looking forward to finally using that equipment.  I just want to buy some better leader material, and maybe a small gas grill for the venison steaks.  Tied a bunch of quick strike rigs last night.

Just getting around to it but I think most things are in order from last year.  I do have about 4 jigging poles now - one for every pound test up to 6.  Thanks for reminding me about the auger blades   I need to do that.

Also, do you use a heater or lantern out there?  Don't forget about mantels and propane.  If you are in a small town you likely won't find them in the local SugarCreek.

Great tip,  I use a coleman dual fuel lanter and stove for lighting and cooking.I have two Coleman Sportcats (both sizes) I do not recommend them!

I need to get a can of fuel, new mantels and and new heater!

I agree.  I have the smaller one and it does take the edge off the coldest of days, but I wouldn't say it keeps you warm.

Don't get me wrong, I have had this unit for several years now and it has worked great.  I first used it in my Clam 2000 and now use it in my Trap Scout.  Calm days it will warm these small shanties a little.  Windy cold days you have to lean right over the thing to keep warm.  It's great if you just want to take the edge off really cold air.  Once and awhile I would like to really crank up the heat if I had it, and this heater won't do that.

I'll probably use it again this year......

I'm no where near ready!!!!!!! My dad went overseas, So I gotta buy my owns supplies for the most part. He said I could use his shanty and vex. That just means I gotta buy all new lures, poles, tip ups and what not. I should be done soon though. And that just leaves me to wait around for the ice.

If you have a shanty and a vex to start out with, that is a pretty good start.
I think if money is tight you should go for the jigs and rods first, they work best in the shanty. and add in the tippers as you go.

My gear has been ready since the end of July. All I need to do is order my bait and find some ice. I got out only 1 time last season after I got my new hip in January so I really have the fever this year.

I can only hope the current 7 day forecast here in western NY holds on for a couple weeks. Maybe Loon and a few smaller lakes will tighten up enough to fish.
