Top Perch Ice Fishing Jig
« on: Dec 08, 2022, 05:17 PM »
I'm new to Ice Shanty, so if I posted this in the wrong place, let me know...

What is your top "go to" jig for perch in the Helena area?

Add color, size and what bait you tip them with, too.

I got this one last year on Canyon Ferry!

Regards,
Mr. Fishunt

Go to the "Franks Great Outdoors" website and look for "Jacks" hooks.  They have all different styles and colors.  I use them pretty much exclusively on the Saginaw Bay, while ice fishing.  I do use Heli's and small pimples on open water but for ice fishing the Jack's are my go to hooks.  The reason being, I like to catch them quick and get back down into the hole.  Jack hooks come barbed and barbless.  I use those with a barb if I'm fishing in water over 10ft.  If I'm fishing in shallower, I'll strictly use the barbless.  Using barbless while fishing shallow, I can hook the fish, get it out of the water, and hit it on the ice and the fish comes off easily.  Then I can get right back down into the water and catch as many as possible before the school leaves.  This also helps keep my hands dry and warmer!  If you use the barbless, make sure you don't give them "any" slack, or you'll be pulling up an empty hook, lol.  You will find they have different styles of hooks.  Some look like little tea spoons, they call those the willow leaves.  Then they have them that look like tri-angle, the normal Jack hook, and some that look like triangles with the top corners cut off.  Those are called fast action Jacks.  The regular triangle hooks flutter more and the fast actions, don't flutter as much but do wobble as the drop and they drop quicker than the regular Jacks.  Jack hooks come with different colored beads on them and with different finishes.  Some are hammered, some of the blades are painted different colors, some are silver and some brass.  The beads are in about 10 different colors, as well.  And, the spoons come in different sizes.  I try to have a selection of them in my hook box.  Actually I think I have about 60 of them right now.  Hmmm, sounds like I need to get there for more soon!  If you want a great perch hook that works well while jigging for perch, the Jack hooks will fit the bill!

I’m thinking that a perch caught like that…I wouldn’t post I caught it on a certain body of water. And, don’t really need the “ go to” lures info from anyone else. Nice perch by the way!!😎

In my experience with Perch,  the jig isn't the issue.  But I will say that my best rig is a plain Aberdeen hook with a minnow or a Tungsten gold in color with Wigglers ( my #1 go to). That's all I use.

These came last week on my first choice above.

Nice perch and my go-to jig is a small Chubby Darter in "Perch", but at least around here, perch are rarely discerning... I would have released that perch, it must have a million eggs in it alone... But to each their own.

Most my perch are caught on accident targeting other species but do pretty good on 3 to 4mm jigs with little atom micro nuggies and wedgies.

Nice, 12 years on here and you haven't contributed much, pretty much the pot calling the kettle black. I did look at yours posts, so I know that you haven't helped, but can bet you've used everyone else's info for your own benefit.

I stand corrected, they sold them up until this year.  Apparently the guy who made them had a stroke this past spring and just recently passed away!  I guess I'll have to really treasure the 60 or so, that I have!

Over the years, I've seen very little love given to the Ratfinkee and Wolfinkee, the latter being the tungsten version of the former.  They're compact, quite versatile, and simply irresistible to a variety of species.

I still carry some and use them from time to time, also use a genz bug sometimes.

Tough to get down to 30-45 ft where I catch most of my perch-

The genz bug definitely has its place and time in my arsenal.

Touche sir.  I'll admit, i switch to spoons like a small kastmaster, hali, tingler, etc. when basin fishing for deeper perch.

I'll use them under a pimple as a dropper in deeper water.

I have had decent luck with the Lindy Perch Talker tipped with maggots. Once you have a school on yer spot it doesn't seem to matter that much. I do like the tungsten jigs for getting back down a bit quicker.
