Built a Smitty Sled
« on: Oct 27, 2022, 11:14 AM »
Winter forecast for upper Midwest predicts lots of snow.  Manhauling my flip over and gear last year taxed my 67 year old body.  I just completed a Smitty Sled to ease my burden this year. Bring on Winter. I am ready.

If you don’t have a Smitty sled you have to build one. I went from using 2 people to move my house to one hand.

I'm old like you.  :roflmao: It's a game changer for sure. Another thing that makes it easier to pull? A tree/safety harness. Started using one last season. Much nicer than using my hands.

I'm tempted to just throw skis under my sled. Mostly for less drag and wear when dragging on the dirt road from my house to the lake when there's not much snow and ice on it.
I imagine the tall Smittys must be nice for long, straight, hauls in deep snow but it must be a bear to turn a Smitty sled?

When you have to turn it seems like you'd have to be careful not to fold the 4 "legs"?

YouTube has plenty of videos. That is where I got my final design. Plenty of options. Good luck!

Through or throw?
If it's throw I agree.

I think you better strap your sled to it and try it now. Doesn’t look very stable..  JMO

You could add some carriage bolts to your cross braces ,like a traditional Smitty sled, that will tighten things up as they would pin/dowel it to your uprights . Drill the hole just enough for a tight fit and countersink it some to accommodate the nut on the carriage bolt underside .
Give a man a fish he eats for a day .Teach a man to ice fish he has an obsession for a lifetime
