well I see that the fish started an inch after the tape and ends at 26(which is the fork of the tale) that adds up to 24,, keep up the newfie math.

Ya it looks shorter cause it's curled downward. Oh well. I haven't seen many bigger that have been posted pre-tourney. And the fishing is slowing down now. Good luck boys ;D

The rest of the story:

Headed out just after light, first on ice. As always. Tons of little guys.....biggest was about 14".

The scenery to start:
Hiking in:

Cool shot:

Island:

A few macro shots:

This one had a really nice copper colour:

And does anyone know what this is? A parasite or a disease? About 40-50% of the fish caught had it and I've never seen it on any fish in there before.... (Looks similar to a disease I see on squawfish in Summit Lk.)

Yay for the anything category....lol

Kev:
Gettin ready:

First fish caught ice fishing

Couple of monsters:

Me with a few:

Keepers:

Video to come if I can get it uploaded. Had lots of fun but would have been better if the bigger fish had been biting.

Same thing at another lake I fish at (Kathie). A ton of brookies but all very small....well 10-13 inches. Too many fish for the availible feed. Then they get stunted. I know in Kathie lake I will never eat any fish out of there. They are soft, mushy and tasteless. I think they should put in a "No limit" for a couple years on that lake to thin them out.  I also C&R lots but sometimes I like to take a meal home. Even C&R guys like to catch bigger fish than there. Fish were so stupid there that I pulled my lure up my 8 inch hole while sight fishing, the little brookie followed it right up hole and when I pulled it about an inch out of water, he jumped for it, bang, fish on...or should I say mushy minnow on.

Nice pics you got there

I've been told the ones from Camp aren't bad at all. They definitely need to be thinned out. I've got noone to feed them to, or I would have taken a limit.

PGkris -

Those black spots are likely to be encysted dormant larval stage of a flatworm parasite.   If you want to get a little scientific about it - you can call it digenetic trematodes......or more simply black spot / black grub.

Those spots appear black as it is a response by the host fish to the parasite which produces a dark pigment which is deposited in the tissue surrounding the cyst.

They have existed in Camp Lake for quite some time and it is not an uncommon occurence.

Is the fish safe to eat - you bet.

::) ::)

I figured they were tremmys.

And does anyone know what this is? A parasite or a disease? About 40-50% of the fish caught had it and I've never seen it on any fish in there before.... (Looks similar to a disease I see on squawfish in Summit Lk.)

Obviously you didn't.  You stated in your picture post that you had never seen it before and had absolutly no clue what they were.  You were asking if anyone knew what they were.

Nice try.    :)

I don't know who GG is ? you've lost me on that one.

Wow you sure like to be an a$$ don't you? I said I've never seen it in that lake before. What makes you so qualified hmm?? I suppose you know best, you are one of the internet's unbelievably talented armchair biologists. Don't you ever do anything besides pick fights?

As far as being a fairly new person on here, I can see that PIKEGUY nailed it.

First of all, I merely answered in a civil way to your curiousity as to what the black spots were.

Then you come back to say that you knew they were tremmys, then tried to say I spelt it wrong when maybe you should broaden your own education and know you can spell it the way I did and then you further claim in the same sentence that someone told you it was a disease.  Simply put, if you knew they were tremmys, then you'd know its a parasite! Something doesn't seem right!

Obviously you have some issues with humble pie and accepting the fact that its ok not to know something.

I never said I knew what they were, I asked if anyone did. You said they were digenic trematodes. OK that's one man's opinion. Backs up one story I've heard about them. I have been flip-flopping about what they are and until someone verifies for me what they are with 100% certainty I will continue to be skeptical. Can you not see why I would be more than hesitant to take your word as Gospel? Your first 10 posts on the site seem to solidify my position. You also made some crack about rookies wearing jeans....well I'm sorry I didn't realize it was -25C outside and I was going to die wearing denim....I'll be sure to wear woolkills next time out...sheesh.

Grasshopper if you want to head out let me know anytime and we'll try to plan something. We'll see what the big guns do to my rainbow lead on mon/tues. I might be planning another trip down south. Tight Lines

I dunno man, there's something about a 10" speck in good colour that beats a 5 pound rainbow any day. Especially when I can pull em out by the dozen :D I love them fish.....someday I'll go back east and fish them in their native waters
