Pretty slick
« on: Feb 21, 2021, 09:45 AM »
I seen a guy all week dragging a clam flip over all over the place.  Finally chatting with him and it was pretty slick.
They are semi permanent mounted but man he had me sold on the idea.
You flip up to drag and fold down to fish.
When done correctly,  it puts the shanty 10 or so inches off the ice/ snow while dragging and flat while fishing.

Nice! Did you happen to take a pic of where he mounted them on the bottom of his sled?

Exactly like that.
He did have shims where it mounts to the sled fir a flat surface mount.
I also believe the skis were cut right to end of shanty when folded down.

Never claimed to be a salesman,  just passing information.  No I didn't take pictures but if you looked up ^
Someone posted a perfect video.

They are coffee table hinges,  not recliner.
The bottom flat part with pistons mount to skis. The other end is angled to mount to the side of the sled. Pretty simple

That is super cool.  I would love to have come up with that system. High marks to the designer.  I do wonder about longevity as salt, air and water start to do their thing on the hydraulics and pivot points.

Very slick indeed though.

Said it was second season with that system and given he was out 6 days I was watching him cover the entire lake with ease,  I'd assume he fishes often.
There was slush to glare to 4 " snow those days.
He also demonstrated with 1 hand the open and fold down.
At $22 and change,  other than screwing up the placement of holes you must put in your sled,  seems like a cheap investment

I paid double that for my coffee table hinges. Worth every penny and only thing I will add is to drill holes in the tip of the skis and put the tow rope there. Lifts the front of the skis and makes it even easier. You might need to cut angled wood shims to match the angle on your sled and get them vertical and put a metal bracket on the inside to bolt too. The hinges are pretty strong and are rated for 100lbs a set so 2 sets are good for 200. You could easily have 200lbs of force with much less weight in the sled. Just don't bury it in the slush and try doing tight turns and you should be fine. I destroy everything I touch. These seem like I'll get a few years out of them. Probably destroy the hut before the hinges.

Ive seen this mentioned a few times, but now I'm really thinking i will make this happen before next season. Just seems so much easier and simpler than putting the shanty up on a smitty.

The smitty sled was a great idea but as we evolve,  so do improvements.
If you don't mind drilling holes in your sled , this looked like the cat's meow as it's a single in place unit and watching that guy go all over the lake while I was struggling to drag to make another move.
Just make sure you think it out carefully as to weight placement when open and ski length when closed.
You can move the bottom holes where it attaches to the skis but you really only get 1 shot at mounting to the sled.
Good luck.

Just bought two sets on Amazon for $24 a set.  A total of $53 with tax.  They will be delivered on Wednesday and on my sled Wednesday night.

Cool.
The ones I posted were  22 and change a set including free shipping.
Maybe someone figured out they were becoming a hot seller and raised price.
Good luck,  hope they work well for you

I'd be worried the hydrolics freeze up & damage from dragging through all the slush & water too but sounds like it's pretty dependable based on everyone's comments. Definitely a cool idea

They had some on Amazon that looked just like the ones I bought, for $45 a set!  Soooo, some companies are already charging an outrageous amount.

There's one on amazon that has two pairs for about $33, but the Q&A says they are only rated for 66lbs, when most are rated 100+ lbs.

I don't think ill be willing to pay more than 20-25 a pair.

One of my friends did this to his frabil with the same hinge but with springs instead of the pneumatic cylinder.  At first I didnít like the spring idea but maybe it would be better in the long  run. He said they work just as good and should last a lot longer.  They are also cheaper.

Been running mine for 2 seasons. Alot of there pressed in stops popped out. I replaced them with stainless 3/4 inch bolt but other than that I love mine.  And I fish alot. My hinges have the springs instead of hydraulics

I'm on year 2 sure I wouldn't of had to replace any of the stops if I didn't take a spill going down the dam at cuba lake. They are quite sturdy I sit on mine when the skis are up if I'm hole hoping. I'm 160 and my gears gotta be close to 200lbs.

Probably 50.00 for all four and you have to buy the skis separate.
I live back in the woods you see
