No Fish, some pics
« on: Jan 14, 2021, 10:14 PM »
• A bunch of words about not catching fish
• A few pics (no fish pics)
• Hopefully some one skilled posts some pics of fish

Hello
I’m Mike
Nice to meet you

I had a few hours free mid day on Wednesday so I took my new ice fishing gear out to see what worked and what worked really good. (I haven’t ice fished in 15 years, so all new equipment)

Chose a local* trout pond that I just realized has gotten much busier in the last few years.
* within 30 miles of Lebanon NH

Ended up the only action was a hit and run in 2 fow as I was setting my fourth tip up. The eggs were just below the ice as I was setting the flag, I got the flag set, looked to put the tip up in the water—-no eggs
At first I thought I had pulled the eggs out of the water while setting the tip up.
Quickly realized I had been ambushed
Felt nothing at the other end, pulled in what little had been pulled out to the right.
Eggs were intact.
Put them down again just using my hands to jig/wiggle nothing for 30 seconds (it felt much longer than that)
I went to reset the tip up down and another quick pass by the fish, it didn’t grab it just swam through pushing the eggs.
I set the tip up hoping for more action but nothing.

I didn’t ever see the fish.

Fishing looked slow across the pond.

Beats working sounds like a fun day either way...... I've had that happen before with the phantom lurking bait stealing fish. Try throwing a small tungsten on with a soft plastic on it or a little piece of worm sometimes they come back and hit that.
Every fish is a good fish!

Bacon recommendations?

I went out on Friday for a few hours in the afternoon on the same trout pond, went to the south end out from the boat launch.
Leap-frogged my tip ups along the west shoreline.
Again no fish.

I should be out again next week, but might try some other water
and will pick up some worms.

The new Kayem small batch recipe Bacon is pretty good. For the commercial stuff

Besides that, stay local, small farms are hidden gems  ;D

Bacon and eggs is what we call it when we put salmon eggs up on the eye of the hook and thread a dilly on the rest of the hook. When they’re just sucking eggs or hit and spitting it seems to get em to slow down and chomp it longer

I know that pond, it does get quite a bit of pressure but there are some big trout in there... I have my best luck there when I’m the first on the ice and/or the last off. Good luck!

Thank you for the eggs and bacon tip Hottuna.

Some dillweed quite a few years back caught a nice trout there and got patch from the state for recognition of the catch.
Only to realize at a later time the state posts the information on the internet for all to see.

Was just b***hin about that myself

NH has a trophy program where you get a fruity pin or something. The fact you need to provide where you caught it should turn anyone off from doing it or offering any pond name on this thread. Your honey hole will be raped and pillaged.

I always can’t figure out the draw to it either? Especially with Deer?

I killed the big buck, you can’t kill it again, it’s gone now. Your odds are worse.

x2 makes no sense i remember when you used to have to catch a tagged trout to win the derby and years ago a guy caught one in massabesic to win the derby after that the place was packed you couldn't find a parking spot if you made one (I only know because i live 2 miles from it) now its business as usual only people i see fish it are people who walk on from the park or boat launch. same with moose my wife got drawn 1 year and I the year after I got drawn for zone M there were only 2 tags pulled and what are the odds i'd run into a guy from RI with a tag come to find out fish and game posts where moose were taking in previous years that really pissed me off but my scouting paid off in the end.

I had a few free hours yesterday afternoon so I drove back to the same pond.

Cold day and I pretty much had the whole pond to myself, the last 2 times out the place was full of ice fishing people.

2 flags
1 11 innh rainbow
1 12 inch brown

First flag of the season happened immediately, while I was setting up second hole the first tip up flag triggered.

Brown trout

Nice man! You caught the early bite. Love when the flags start flipping as fast as you can get them set. In the past I’ve missed some fish not paying attention while dicking around with my next trap.
