Tecumseh Ice Auger FUEL RATIO
« on: Jan 13, 2021, 01:26 PM »
Hello everyone,
So I have an Eskimo with the Tecumseh motor TMO49XA-3607B
Model:8900B
Serial: 16233
I decided to remove the carburater and rebuild it. Everything is Back together now and it's ready to fire up but I'm getting mixed answers on fuel ratio. I plan to buy the pre mixed fuel in a can. The motor has a label saying 24:1 others are saying there was a change and these now are recommend at 40:1
I just need to figure out what can of premixed fuel to buy.
Thanks in advance everyone. 🎣

They WERE changed by Tecumseh yrs ago because of the oil porting out the exhaust.  FACT.

40:1,  Mixing chart from  Jiffy the Tecumseh TM049 is included.  I think I actually have been running 50:1 I have used the same mix that I used in my Stihl string trimmer.

I know there's lots of guys who run oil ratios other than what the motor manufacturer calls for but I stick with what they call for.  In my opinion they designed the motor to run at a certain ratio and I'm going to stick with it.  For me it's the peace of mind knowing that using their ratio there's less chance of being too lean on the oil and something bad happening.  I don't mind if it smokes a little, that's a lot cheaper to deal with than replacing a blown motor.

Which ever way you go make sure you are using Ethanol free fuel. I vote is the 40:1 though.

They were originally rated 24:1 for maximum engine life, back when oil was dinosaurs and not very good. We have had a significant improvement in oil quality and effectiveness, so in the later years tecumseh put out a service/owners note saying 40:1 is acceptable to reduce exhaust and plug fouling since they realized these motors mostly used on ice/earth augers and chainsaws are not going to be ran for thousands of hours.

So yes 40:1 synthetic premix is what you should be running.

I always add some Seafoam and Starttron in the the gas when I mixing it.  It definitely helps keeping the fuel system cleaner and minimize the effects of Ethanol.  Until last year we didn't have the option of buying non-ethanol fuel unless you went with the premixed fuel which is pretty expensive.
