Oops, the extra $5 for a frisbee would have saved him another $40 bucks.

I wouldn't recommend a Frisbee, they can crack in cold weather.

We have all made ice fishing mistakes. Live and learn. In this case he keeps pointing out the money saved. Now it is money saved, x2 + disc.

After watching this guy hunched over his 3' tall auger, holding onto his drill with all he's got, and riding it down all the way until his bit drops off down the hole I'm not entirely convinced this isn't viral marketing for the clam plate.  Did we just get punked? :P

The thing I don't get just from a physics point is how there is enough friction in the chuck to cut a hole, but not enough to hold in a 5lb bit.  Did you put the drill in reverse to get it unstuck or did it just plop off as soon as you broke through?

there is no way that he should have to apply that much pressure to drill a hole. My guess is that his drill does not have enough tourque. Gonna burn out that drill in no time. Get an extension!

Pretty Thick ice

Adapter may have had round arbor vs one with flats.  and auger spun

Adapter may have been soft aluminum
and distorted by steel chuck

Chuck may not have been tight .
Obviously not the first hole of the day

8” a pretty chubby auger size for hand drill

Dull blades can contribute to slip

Always that chance when you punch thru and jerk back out the blade can catch

Act of God.  ;D

My plastic disc  has saved me more than once.

That is exactly the sort of luck I have. I am shocked at how well that thing cuts though. I always thought the drill adapters would make for an underpowered auger.

One possibility is some drills have a brake that has the nasty habit of loosening the chuck. I have a Ridgid that comes exactly that. Very annoying

I have a 20v brushless Hart that brake stops really hard like that. It'll definitely loosen the chuck up in a hurry. I like the drill, but that is very annoying.

I mean seeing his headwear at the start of the video......you knew something like that was going to happen. I'm surprised the video didn't start with hold my beer.

There were a few key words and actions in there that screamed he is pretty new to this whole thing. I guess a little bit more research would have lead him to several adapter options that have a safety strap/bar. They need more knowledge at whatever store he was bragging up so they can sell some quality adapters to guys... or maybe this is part of their marketing strategy, new $42 auger and adapter each weekend until they learn.

He had the quality two step Strikemaster adaptor....he just didn’t put on the Strikemaster plate.

Mine does that too! I am forever tightening it when I am drilling in the shop. For winter, I remove the chuck and screw my auger adapter onto the arbor of the drill directly. There is a guy on EBAY that makes them to your specs, and mine is longer than the standard 2 inch chuck type. If the chuck was a reliable solution, you would not need a frisbee.
