Itís starting
« on: Oct 12, 2020, 09:29 AM »
I went up north this weekend to bring the boat home and noticed all the little ponds were capped over.  The bigger lakes still had some open spots but they should be fully capped over any day now.  I woke up at the cabin yesterday and it was 20 degrees out and the little bay that I dock my boat in had a narrow strip of open water just big enough to get my boat out.  Itís kind of funny that I started the open water season breaking ice with my boat and I ended up finishing it breaking ice.  Itís looking like we are on course for a normal winter this year so hopefully I can get the shack out around thanksgiving.  Good luck this year everyone and be safe out there.
I was born an Alaskan I just didn't live here at the time.

I had frost on the pickup, but don't even hope for ice before Christmas. Guess we are living through you guys up north until then...

When I lived in Fairbanks I would usually be ice fishing by mid-October. Alot of people there thought I was crazy for going out on 4 inches of ice, but that is the norm in Southern WI. I've been out on 2 inches before here, but don't plan on doing that again.

Here in Pennsylvania my goal is before Christmas.  Then before New Years.  Then hopefully we get safe ice at some point!

Last year we did not.  Sigh...

Sunday and Monday we're not going to break 20 degrees, with lows in the negative single digits, but then we're gonna pop right back up into the 50's. :(

4" on some puddles Saturday.  Only pulled up dink rainbows and grayling, but that's what we were expecting.  Just wanted to get off the couch.  Might try some better prospects this weekend.

Yep, been awhile since it's been that cold this early up there, looks like some favorable weather for the opening day of rifle season.

I'm jealous.

Out here in NW MA, in a good year, we can get out from about Thanksgiving (Nov. 20 something) to Tax Day (April 15th).

Icefishing in October is unheard of.

Might have a chance after work Monday or Tuesday if the wind stays down.

Shovele a few driveways tonight; had the coozy on to keep the beer from freezing too fast. Might ditch work early tomorrow and see what the lakes are like...
