Ada Hayden Trout stocking
« on: Jan 26, 2020, 01:08 PM »
Is anyone heading to the trout stocking next Saturday at Ada Hayden? I’m going to take my kids to get into some rainbows. It’s a really good time. Jax does a nice job to help make it a family event.

How big are the rainbows that are stocked? I fished the pond by Spencer one year, I couldn't believe how big they were, some were 15" long. I live closer to a couple ponds that SD stocks with trout, theirs are usually about 7-10" long.
Every plastics manufacturer claims plastics outfish livebait. So now I use livebait just for the increased challenge.

I would say they vary in size. A lot are probably 8-10”. I’ve caught some pushing 15. Fun, constant fight for the kids.

In my past experience at Moorland Pond near Ft Dodge, the trout I caught were 9-13".  They're a lot of fun but I can't help but think I'm cheating when fishing for those stocked little guys.

That’s why I like it to introduce the kids to ice fishing. Fast almost guaranteed action.

I don’t fish for stocker trout. Don’t care for the lack of taste. Having said that I don’t see it as cheating. That is why states stock them, so folks can have an easy day on the lake!
Keep it safe! JDL

Yes, great for kids, but I don't feel the same satisfaction of catching these as I do other fish.  That's all I'm saying.  It's still a blast.  I'd do it often, but the closest place is about 50 minutes away.  I'm not sure it's worth the $ to go twice a year, which is about how many chances I'd get.

The DNR has postponed the event.
