Dropdown shack frame question
« on: Jul 12, 2019, 10:38 PM »
I have a question about the effects of the axle on the structural integrity of the frame   I am using 2 x 3 11 gauge frame and I have penetrated through the frame with a 2 inch axle. Is it critical that I weld both sides of the outer frame (see pictures) or is the framework around it enough?  The shack will be 6 x 10 and is going to be relatively heavy.  Thanks, Dave....

I'd weld it. It might weaken over time there.

You are going to want to weld all the way around. It'll be stronger to weld all the way around.

Thanks for the feedback.  I did cut the sleeves and welded each half to the frame.  No more wishin' I did it!  Now to get the whole frame sprayed with bed liner.

So I split the sleeves on the pivot point and welded the sleeve closest to the frame, to the frame.

Complete weld around shaft. Also I don't see a grease zerk on the pivot sleeve. You'll be extremely frustrated start of season 2 when your house won't drop down to the ice.

Keep us informed as the construction goes forward.  Would like to see the different phases including the lifting and lowering mechanism and the finished project.

Idea for Lower/Raise lift mechanism. First built mine with hand cranks, last summer replaced hand cranks with $50 EA. 12volt power winches. Worked great last winter down to -22 deg.
