Can you feed spikes to make them bigger?
« on: Jan 16, 2019, 11:22 PM »
When I received my spike bait order for this season (1000) I noticed they were a lot smaller then in the past years.  Does anyone know if I can feed them to make them increase in size, if so what?  I called the bait wholesaler and they said they only re-pack and ship the bait they get from commercial bait companies.

Nope, they've already been in a dormant state so now when you warm them back up to feed them they will pupate and hatch into flies.

I feed my spikes but each one needs to be fed individually, as they will fight each other to get to the food.

What I do is separate one or possibly two spikes from the container.  Then I put them on a hook and allow them to eat as many bluegills, perch and crappie as they can.  When they are full they usually fall off the hook and I begin feeding the next spike.

It is a very labor intensive process but I do enjoy it.  ;D
take care,

Thanks for the info Kevin, that makes sense.  Already have some turning brown and hard (pupate state).  Got to get a more reliable supplier.

Colder! If they are turning hard then they are too warm (or too old but its too early in the season for that unless you bough from a pet store or something). 35/36 deg
