I'm driving a 2012 GMC 3500 HD with 265/70R18 tires and the owners manual says no tire chains. I can see on the front there is definitely no room for them but there looks like lots of space around the rear tires and below the fenders.

Anyone else with one of these trucks running chains on the back? Or am I stuck (pun intended) with using cables only?

You will have no problem at all running chains on the rear. We have owned a lot of GM's throughout the years, and run chains on them all of the time.  Actually, we run them on the front also.  Just be sure to get them tight.  Any slack or loose links will definitely come into contact with something.  If tight on the front, you may touch the inner fender when turned all the way.  Just take it easy.

I ordered some cables yesterday, hopefully will never have to use them.

Funny thing with GM trucks. Years ago while cruising the owner's manual, saw a bit about "not to be driven on gravel roads". We had a yuk yuk over that as the fleet was 2500 4x4 crew cabs. I could see that the outside cables would be ok. Those ones that have a few to strap on the wheel would have issuea with caliper clearance.
