when my spud goes threw in one wack I'm turned around and on my way back in  ......... very serious question why carry a spud if it goes threw in one wack and you keep going?  I want  2 solid hits  and feel the  thud.....that's just me

Can't wait to get out there as well but man I agree, if I used a spud and it went right through, why keep going?  Will be my first season fishing Oneida but I can wait until I don't have to think if I'll be getting wet that day.  Good luck all!

Good question trap. That's like, ya I got out on the lake, hiked out to about 25 FOW and my foot dropped right thru.... so I set up all my stuff and started fishing  @)

Pretty crazy! One whack going thru I might be belly crawling my way back. The older you get the less you want to get wet or drown. Everyone one has the itch but patience and using your head keeps you fishing a few more years

I am headed to Oneida in a couple of weeks. I read through the thread and found some of the suggestions. If anyone wants to PM me with some other info great.

What I know:
Parking at Sylvan/Verona Beach
Look for structure
Avoid Crowds
Spud Spud
Find Active Fish

Thanks and Be Safe

Yes, Thanks for the report on the ice thickness.   It is nice to get a report from someone that was actually out there.  I have heard enough from the couch or computer seat observers, but I do agree that a spud is the proper method to check the ice thickness your first couple of time out.

I was at Apps yesterday and they said there was about 3" out front. That area always takes a bit longer to freeze with the little extra water flow.

You should ask in the topic labeled ONEIDA LAKE DIEHARDS, as that is where everyone posts things about oneida lake, and you will be much more likely to get a response there. Although it's not a guarantee.

Hi all,

looking to come over (live in Rochester) to fish Oneida over Presidents Day weekend. Any suggestions on a reasonable, per friendly place to stay? with have a ATV so beach access would be great. Was hoping to try for walleye for the first time so was considering east end, maybe around Cleveland, Sylvan Beach, etc...

Thanks in advance

If I were you for your first trip stay in Canastota at the Days Inn.  Reasonable prices and not far from Sylvan Beach which is real easy to access.

Got out for first trip of year tonight with my son. Saw some people out in various places. Spudded out at one spot and found about 3 inches on the way out. Didn’t really feel comfortable trying to get out further so tried another spot where there were a few groups out.  Found 4 inches almost everywhere we checked at second spot.  Lots of cracks and noises. Still a bit spooky. Got a good evening bite.  Still need some cold nights to make things less sketchy. Spud spud spud!!!!!
