Re: Lithium Ion battery for Ice Sonar?

Just a quick question, about the Li-Ion Battery topic.
I've been investigating the Li-Ion use for my ice fishing sonar units this past summer.  Knowing that there are lots of choices out there on the market now.
What do you anglers suggest and the best option to run a higher AMH battery to take on the bit appetite of the PanOptix or Livescope units too?
Thanks in advance for you info!

Some people are doubleing up on 10ah batteries like the Dakota or energized outdoor (both recently had a group buy deal on here, but they’re over) there are also 12, 15, and 20 AH lithium options as well. When I have the chance to swap out the SLA, I’m prob going with Energized outdoors battery for my panoptix ice pack.
I just checked and noticed the energized batteries have a Holliday special for two 10ah and charger. https://energizedoutdoors.com/collections/lifepo4-battery

If cost is not the primary concern, I would recommend the 12AH Milwaukee M18.

Add up usage for paonoptics and your finder.

That will give you a good idea of battery size.

I'm looking into a 12v 15ah luthium for ice and for my yak.

I have heard panoptix draws about  .6 amps an hour. Dont quote me on that.

In terms of power per pound/size, the Milwaukee M18 crushes all competitors, almost double the power at close to the same weight and size.

12AH x 18 volts = 216 watt hours of power
10AH x 12 volts = 120 watt hours of power

Weight:
  - The Milwaukee weighs 3.35 pounds (3 pounds 6 oz)
  - The Dakota weighs 2.88 pounds (2 pounds 14 oz)
  - 10AH lead acid is 6.6 pounds  (6 pounds 10 oz)

Dimensions: HxWxL
  - Milwaukee 3.89 x 3.38 x 5.99
  - Dakota 3.74 x 2.55 x 5.94
  - Lead 4.38 x 2.54 x 5.95

I am not covering cost here, The Milwaukee is certainly the most expensive option, but cost is not the only consideration for many people. Though, the output is 18 volts, amazon has small efficient power. However, you could easily run any flasher (or the Garmin Livescope) if you put a 12 volt regulator between the flasher and the battery.

Here is one that would work.

It is sold on Amazon:

Lithium Ion battery for Ice Sonar? Yes, of course.

This is what I use: Milwaukee M18 battery + Milwaukee M18 Power Source (adapter which clips onto battery) that simultaneously converts battery's 18V DC to 12.0 DC (to power fishfinder) and to USB 5.0 DC (to power/charge cellphone, GoPro camera, GPS unit, radio, or anything that can be powered/charge via USB).

This setup can power my Lowrance ELITE-7ti (with a 7-inch monitor) the WHOLE day on ice:

That my issue now too with the Garmin LiveScope, this is the time draw on voltage on the battery that came with the ice bag package that I had built up:
Time (hours:minutes) @ Voltage remaining chart @ Temperature 3C or 34F
00:00 12.3v
00:51 12.0v
01:35 11.8v
02:06 11.7v
02:47 11.6v
03:03 11.5v
04:28 11.4v
05:01 11.3v
05:33 11.3v
06:15 11.2v
06:20 11.1v
07:06 11.0v
07:22 11.0v
08:08 10.9v
08:30 10.9v
09:00 10.9v
09:30 10.7v
10:15 Unit Dead and Battery all drained out.

So I actually got in about 10hrs of usage @ 3C or 34F operating temperature........  I can imagine that in colder weather the usable time will drop, but not sure by how much.

I hope this experiment will shed some light on to all the PanOptix and LiveScope users out there.

Going on year 3 using this dc converter (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00CNXLDCQ/ref=psdc_10967761_t1_B06Y5JHZG2) and Milaukee M18  batteries. Doesn't matter which AH rating my Vex runs all day with power to spare.
This works well as I'm using a Milwaukee Mud mixer and now have 2 batteries when fishing. If the drill battery goes dead I can swap batteries and the battery from the drill will power the Vex for hours even if it doesn't have enough power to run drill.
I'm surprised more people aren't using this type system with the advent of cordless drills for augers.
This voltage converter will work with most all brands just need an adapter to connect to battery. Find a local tool repair business and grab a couple dead batteries for the connectors.
When my sons battery goes south on his Ves I will make a converter for him.
Also very convenient when ya come home from fishing, just pop battery in charger and its ready to go in an hour. Better yet get one of the multi bay chargers and pop all the batteries in.

Does anyone have or know of a setup guide on how to make this work?  Would be an interesting idea to use a Milwaukee battery instead a bulkier 12V battery.

This is science, folks! Stick the unit in the beer fridge out in the garage, turn it on and then make a note of the time and voltage every time you go get a beer. Genius!

How warm does the regulator get?  I might try this someday, I wonder how much power is lost stepping the voltage down?  Have you done a test vs a sla battery?

Interesting that it does with over 10v left.

My garmin 73 died out on me at 8.0v

I wanted to totally discharge battery so I took it out. That battery hasn't been discharged for over 2 years now.

The best bang for your buck right now is the Holiday Package offered by Energized Outdoors.

(2) 10ah batteries and (1) Charger   $169

You can either run these in parallel for 20ah of storage, or have an extra for your lights and stuff.

Bottom line, is that they work awesome. I noticed especially on my LED lights, there is no fade.  It's full brightness with no dimming as the battery dies.

I've got in on the Energized outdoors battery buy on here a month ago... Very happy with the size/weight and it will run my Bayrunner all day powering sonar and quite a bit of led lighting. However one thing that it can't do is handle the initial spike of my inverter (small 300w 2 outlet unit) turning on, the quick load of powering up the inverter must drop the battery to its protection point and it shuts down. Gotta shut off the inverter and wait 5 seconds for the battery to come back online. It could very well be that its my inverter that has a problem with initial start up but my old lead acid batteries never had that issue, and it still works well connecting it to a car battery. Other than that I'm happy with the lithium

+1....that's how I do it to run Livescope and the rest of the shanty....If I'll stay out longer I'd run them in parallel.

Regarding the Milwaukee power source.
Be very careful on what you hook up to these power sources as they are a "very" low amperage device.
They say they are a "2.1 amp USB port" but do not give any info on the 12v port.
Using the 12v they are way lower than 2 amps, how much lower?
I know that at a 2 amp load will kill one in less than 10 minutes!
There is no overload protection and no reverse polarity protection.
I experimented with them last year!
I believe that the "https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06Y5JHZG2/ref=cm_sw_r_fa_tai_INp4Bb0SVGYJC?fbclid=IwAR3Z_eOUuR6EYonMGgNwkqJzgowhmks-ww-x7l6nbjF6q5RLGg8Za8xGwCM" 4 amp unit that gunflint found (which I have not tried) is a better choice as far as a plug and play, or the "https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00CNXLDCQ/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1" which is a 5 amp unit but has to have the voltage adjusted to correct output.
