I have been thinking about it for crappie with live minnows. You could actually fish it with a tight line and a tip down.

works great for perch especially ...tends to tangle sometimes when weight comes outa hole.   rig with plastic, waxworm or combo

I drop shot ice flies, with a 4 or 5mm tungsten jig as the weight.  Some of you cannot do this in your state, I believe.  It's legal in Iowa.

Have been for years especially for deep water yellows. Titanium weight with the jig tied 10-12" above it.

how is this different than dropping to bottom and bringing up a foot? I have never tried it before but seen ice fly jig on bottom with pin head a foot up.

guess what I was after is the idea of a lure on the bottom and a jig further up the line. regardless I am going to us it this season.

Unclegill guys here do it with the jig on the bottom  also with just a sinker on the bottom with double minnow rigs or jigs above , any combination you wish

Gives full action of the rod, and you can get it to the bottom much faster.

Thanks all. Main reason I am looking at this is because I bought a freefall reel and with a 1/32 jig it drops very slowly so thinking that I will use this setup with that reel.

Don't know what you call it but I use perch rods with side spools mounted to the handle and I lock the spool when I fine the depth I want to fish.  I then hand line all my fish, I can get back down to the same depth faster then un-spooling line from a spinning reel.  I use a small jig on the bottom and one more about 18" above tied in a loop so it dangles away from the main line.  This set-up has worked great for me for years and I catch double headers a lot.
