Another phone down the hole...
« on: Mar 07, 2018, 10:10 AM »
There's gotta be a lesson in here somewhere.   ::)

I was night fishing for smelt, and wanted to catch a brown.  Thinking I might be doing it wrong, I googled "how to ice fish brown trout at night".  At that very moment, a big brown bit!  My phone went right down the hole as I scrambled to react!  At least I caught the fish, a solid 17" that tasted great.

There's more.  My last phone found the same watery fate, the first night I ever tried for crappies with a light.  Same thing:  not marking fish and not sure if I was doing it right, I googled "how to hydrowglow crappies ice fishing" and started watching a video.  Sure enough, a big crappie bit, and "splash" went the phone.   That time, I also lost the fish-- so I guess that's an improvement.

Both times the phone was old and barely working, so I'm not too sad about the phone.  Broken camera.  Broken light.  Glitchy screen.  But I feel bad for polluting the ponds.  There's gotta be some nasty stuff in those phones!  Maybe I need a floating case for my next one!

Water tight and floating is the way to go. The Cape Cod Canal has claimed a couple of my phones over the years. Got smart after the 3rd one  ::).

I'd gladly trade this curse for a fat brown most days.

Oh, did I say "curse"?  I meant to say "incredible piece of technology"

Maybe it will pop up on someone's fish finder this summer and you'll get it back

Seriously though, you can get a floating waterproof case for about 10 bucks on Amazon. Well worth it, IMO.

Haha that's kind of how I feel about it!  I'm not sure if I want a new one!  I'm definitely not in a hurry.   If it weren't for Navionics I'd get a rotary phone  ;D  I'm looking into cheaper, older Android phones.  I don't want to give Apple any more money.

The other lesson might be to let the jig rest more.  It actually happened quite a bit this winter:  nothing's biting for a while so I mess around with my phone and that's when the fish shows up.

always afraid that this would happen to me. What I did was tied a loop of nylon twine to the phn and when I go anywhere near the water, I attach a lanyard to the loop.

Haha funny stuff. I feel your pain. Fishing Champlain one time I was fishing in 15 feet of water, no weeds, clear sight to the bottom, so I was kneeling in the shack sight fishing perch and my phone fell out if the breast pocket of my bibs. Crap. Grabbed a tipup and attached my metal ice scoop. Lowered it down the hole but I could see the phone drifted off center of the hole so I had to put my whole arm under the ice to get the scoop near it and successfully retrieved it. Was the good old days when I had a flip phone, dried it for a couple days and I had it for a few more months before it broke.

I had a big double sided box of jigs slide into a hole a few years back in 15 fow. I ended up trying magnets, cutting like 7 holes side by side to fit my big boat net through the hole after rigging an extension pole together only to find out the box wedged perfectly in between two big rocks. No way of getting it...prob $200 worth of jigs!  Im sure theyre all rusted beyond salvage now, the box wasn't waterproof.

I lost a brand new iPhone 8 in joes earlier this winter. Sucks. Couple years back we were walleye fishing the lamoille in May and I sent my phone in the lake in super murky water instinctively dove in (water was like 55 degrees. But recovered the phone on the first five down in 7ft of water by pure luck. A tether is a good idea!

Would a magnet tied to a line be able to retrieve a phone?

There isn’t much magnetic in a cell phone at least smart phones. I would doubt enough to lift it from a lake without a magnet so strong that it would damage anything magnetic in the phone. Most are aluminum or glass cases with lithium batteries a bit of precious metals on the boards, stainless screws, copper and gold ribbons... bunch of plastic, only part I can think of that’s magnetic is the speakers

this thread has inspired me to buy something similar. never lost one down the hole. dropped one in the river made a quick recovery and it lasted about another year until i left it on top of my car while i was talking to a guy about fishing.

I know that I am old school but, not sure why you need a phone along to fish? Leave mine in the truck. Pretty peaceful out there without one. Just my opinion.

I always carry it for emergencies. In the summer I use it to decide whether to stay out when the dark clouds come up over the horizon. The weather apps can tell the difference between a cloudy rainy day and a t storm.

A phone will save yourself and others in emergencies, has helped countless boaters on Champlain call for help. Can use on ice to pin point a location.
I use a neck band with rubber straps, keeps phone close to body to keep battery from dying, still allows use of screen and camera

At least now the fish can call each other.
