One of the things they said would help was to put the ducer in the water just enough to cover the bottom.

First of all, if you aren't running firmware version 5.10, upgrade on their support website. There was some limitations with older firmware versions that have been resolved in the latest firmware. Secondly, make sure your ducer is just below the water line in the center of the hole, this will help with a return. Third, manual or manual dynamic under range. Then adjust your sensitivity and target adjust. If you aren't getting the return you are looking for switch to Gain 2 under sonar mode and repeat adjusting your settings.
