Fishing reels

This may sound stupid but if you hold you rod with your right hand and crank the reel with your left hand is that considered right handed or left handed as far as the reel goes?

, if you reel with your right hand that is a right handed reel
If you reel with your left it's a left handed reel

It depends on the reel.  If you cast with your right hand and reel a spinning reel with your left, that is right-handed.  It is also right-handed to cast with your right hand, switch hands and reel a baitcaster with your right hand.  I do things a little different.  I am left handed and reel everything with my right hand.

Maybe it wasn't such a dumb question after all. I'm right handed and prefer to crank everything with my left hand. So if I was to buy a baitcaster and not have to send it back what should I buy?

I am right handed. I cast with my right arm and then switch the rod to my left hand. I use right hand retrieve reels, spinning, bait casters, and inlines. If you reel with your left hand then you want a left hand retrieve reel.

Allen66, for a bait caster you'd buy a left-handed model.

Should just be left hand retrieve, or right hand retrieve. Make it easy for any style reel.
What colour are you using?

Left handed baitcasting reels are often hard to come by.

Spincasters are left and right retrieve... handle can be put in either side. Googans just spin the rod 180 degrees to put the handle on the opposite side. 😜 Baitcasters are left or right retrieve when purchased.  I cast right handed...spincast handle on left. Baitcaster handle on the right, hold rod in left hand after I cast...

Not really. Most of the reels come in both.
